Lowering crib mattress

Okay, I know I'm not "mechanically inclined" but I thought I'd be able to figure out how to lower the mattress on DD's crib. I have the Mimosa Crib by Alta Baby and decided that it was time to move the mattress down now that DD is getting more mobile. When I went to do this, I could see where I needed to move the screws to change the postiion of the mattress, but I just couldn't figure out how to do it. It's like the bars of the crib are in the way of the screw, so I can't undo it to move it to the next setting hole. The way it looks, I think I may have to take off the sides of the crib to move it down. This just seems ridiculous and impossible to me. How could it be that complicated? Anyone who has this crib have any suggestions? I'll take any advice at all. I'm so frustrated.
