Help! Will Jardine crib paint smell harm my baby?

We are due in June and assembled our white Jardine crib in march, thinking we were ahead of the game. A month later we can't get rid of the paint smell in the nursery. We think it comes from the crib but may be from the white Bassett combo unit. Can't get in touch with Jardine via phone or web, and we're now faced with having to return 1 or both items.

Can this paint smell harm my baby? I read online about a recall of Delta cribs in 2005 due to their using lead paint. I thought this was outlawed in 1978?
