I know it can lock the chair, but does it make it safer? I have seen some with "6 position lock", does that lock the seat or the back? Does it make it recline? If anyone has one I'd love some input on the benefits.

I don't know what the 6 position lock is, but my dutailier has a lock and it just prevents the chair from gliding. I have never used it.

Prior to having my son, I was prepared to forgo the lock, but I decided that I wanted the recline feature (which only came with the lock). Shortly after DS was born, I managed to flip the chair over onto myself (very scarey at 3 am!) b/c I was getting out of the chair when ot wasn't locked. From that point on, I always locked it to get out of it. It stops the chair from rocking which makes it easier to get out of it (esp with a new little baby in your arms!)
