Bedding for Pali Cribs

I've just purchased a Pali crib (the Leeann) and based on what the Fields say in their book about Italian cribs--and Pali especially--and the problem of getting a bumper that will tie securely to the thicker end posts AND won't preclude the movement of the side rail, I'm seeking any opinions out there:

What success or problems have you had with certain kinds of bedding and Pali cribs?

I have the Pali April crib, and my bumper pad is "older" (a discontinued Boynton pattern I got on eBay), so the ties may be longer. I just wrapped the ties around and around the crib slats and tied them in square knots. The bumper pad sort of slid up/got pushed up when you would lower the rail, but once the mattress was dropped down to a lower position, it wasn't so bad. The bumper pad didn't really stop the movement of the side rail, and I would just take a second to push the one tie back down once the rail was back up.
