View Full Version : Will I get sick of a "theme?"

I've never been a big "theme" person. I'm more into subtle design and use of color to create a mood. I also like versatility.

I originally planned to paint the nursery palest blue and have everything else white with a few blue accents. The problem is, I'm having a hard time finding blue and white stuff that isn't themed, floral, or too boring.

So I went online last night and found a couple of sets of bedding that I really like -- and surprised myself, because both are "themed." One is the Sammy Frog bedding by Brandee Danielle:

It's so clean looking and gorgeous! The other is Flyaway by Glenna Jean:

Both are so cute, but rather theme-y. The Flyaway seems more subtle and versatile, but I have my issues with it -- I'd probably end up mixing and matching from other collections (for example, the Ladybug collection from Pine Creek -- http://www.babyexpressions.com/baby_crib_bedding/PCR4-PC63BC-GP_ladybugs_baby_crib_bedding.php) to cut down on the multicolored gingham. The Sammy Frog is absolutely gorgeous, but I guess I worry I'd be sick of the pastels by winter and frustrated that I'd spent $380 on something so one-dimensional. I mean, I'd have to go with a Frog theme. A theme. The thing I didn't want to do. But it is soooooo pretty . . .

One other option I had considered was Baby Blue Skies by Wendy Bellissimo:

But it's kind of boring for the price. I hate to spend that kind of money and end up with the overall effect no different than if I had just bought the basics at Babies R Us. Nothing against BRU -- I just wouldn't pay that kind of cash there.

Thoughts?????

I am not a theme person either but i do feel if you go with a theme then you need to stick with it to some extent.... however doing the curtains and valances and what not in the same theme is OVERKILL in my opinion.

So there is a fine balance there.

I really like the idea of white with blue accents. I am just wondering if it might be too clean for a nursery. I am a primary colors kind of gal myself (for the baby anyway) and i don't have a theme (or a nursery) but like to keep things bright. Lately, Leela has been staring and trying to pick the animals on her crib sheets (company store).

But if wanted white with blue accents.. i absolutely LOVED the ric rac from pottery barn kids from last year (this years ric rac is hideous imo).

here are a couple of links to auction if you want to see what i am talking about:

I do love the animals bedding from PBK also. Very happy and not too baby like.

Oh, i love the Flyaway but i see it on everything these days, especially diaper bags. It is VERY pretty though.

Have fun! And when you decide, do post pictures!

Just FYI, there was another thread on this recently. I don't remember if it was in this forum or another, but do a search on theme or themed and see if you can find it. Lots of people have not done a theme, including myself and been happy with their decision!

Oh, here I found the link....

HTH!

ETA: Before you consider the Wendy Bellisimo brand, you might want to refer to the "Wendy Bellisimo Gone" thread in this forum. Some people are not happy about their recent change in direction for their company.

Rashmi, that's PERFECT! Thank you so much -- it's exactly what I've been hoping to find, with no luck! And I'll save a fortune by "doing it E-bay." You are the best!

Maybe I'll still get the Flyaway crib mobile, though -- it's really cute. :)

You are oh so welcome. :)

Why don't you call PBK and see if their outlets have last years bedding? You might save a bunch and get the whole set.

Oh, and i would keep the receipt for the mobile. We had to go through a couple before Leela showed any interest. Finally she liked the Tiny Love Symphony in Motion. Some things are not up to you i am afraid! :)

That's a great idea, but too late -- I just bought both pieces on E-bay (bumper and crib skirt)! They're really all I need -- I'll just find a coordinating blue fitted sheet somewhere else, and I don't need a quilt.

I'll keep that in mind about the mobiles. Leela sure seemed fascinated by hers when we were over there!
