Has anyone used either of these types of paints? I'm interested in hearing about how they worked out and if you have any tips or suggestions on how to make them work even better. Also if you used a particular brand that worked out really well, I'd like brand names too.

Also, any suggestions on how to do accesories for a chalkboard wall/partial wall? What I'm looking for is ways to catch the chalk dust. Is it better to paint all the way to the floor and let the dust just go on the floor? Or is it better to put a shelf under the chalkboard wall to catch the dust?
I wanted to put the paint all the way to the floor since my kids are under 2 still.

Thanks in advance,
Dana

I remember seeing a pic of a BBB member who had done this. I'm really interested in doing it so I hope she chimes in.

We did two areas in the nursery, one in a chalkboard and then we painted the entire back of the door. Here are pics.

Sorry, now I am seeing that you can't see the whole door in the second one. The pics were taken around the art not the chalkboards. ;)

We painted the whole door top to bottom. The previous owners had torn the door up and it was easier to patch and then paint over it with chalkboard paint then to strip and refinish the door. We did not paint the outside the faces the hallway.

I am not sure of the brand, but we picked it up at Home Depot/Lowes. We got a quart and painted the back of the door three times and the "chalkboard" twice.

For the chalkboard, we taped off guides and then painted within. Then a frame was added to go with the theme of the room. As you can see in the pic there is a handy little built in bench right below that is easily cleaned. We plan on adding a chalk holder eventually, but for now the chalk is in the box for storage.

Obviously with the door I just vacuum the dust. Very easy clean up.

We used a paint brush for application, it is a little bumpy so you may want to consider rolling it.

We found that priming the door with the side of the chalk all over and then cleaning it off, helped with avoiding permanent chalk marks. Once Maddy took to it with chalk she poked at it more than writing on it, so we have some marks that can't be washed off on the door. The chalkboard was primed and this has not happened, same kid and same chalk.

LMK if you have any other questions.

Wow, thanks so much, that's incredible and you're so creative! Great job.
I love the frame idea and also the idea of painting something on top of the chalkboard paint the way you did the sheep.

We did this in Elliot's old room before we moved (unfortunately), and we're planning on doing it again in his new room as soon as I find some ambition to get it done.

We used the green chalkboard paint on the lower half of the walls and then had trim installed as a border between the top and the bottom... the trim functioned as a ledge to hold the chalk.

It was great fun... my niece (4.5 yrs) and nephew (1.5 yrs) really thought it was cool. They loved drawing and coloring things in with the different colored chalk. The dust actually wasn't bad at all.

The only caution is that when you paint the room be sure to keep ALL the windows open and allow it several hours to air out. The paint fumes are a little overbearing in my opinion. Of course, we painted a very large area, if you're only painting a small square section it might not be too bad at all.
