I am such a total dog DORK!! When it's dog themed clothing, it has to be MY breeds, not a random Golden, Lab or Scottie, or even a Siberian (no offense, all are great breeds, just not my thing). So after posting on the PWD listserve, this is what I found.

I already ordered this one (it's a fundraiser for PWD cancer research)

Still trying to decide between these two:

And waiting for yet another, which will be a fundraiser for PWD rescue.

Am I pathetic, or what?!! :)

I'm going to be dumb...what is a PWD? It's verry cute, and I keep telling DH that dd wants a doggie (lol, actually Mommy wants one!). Tell more...good with kids? Well behaved in house? Yard size, energy and obedience level?

I think those Ts are adorable. I like the one you bought and the FOOD one best.

Best,
Mary

PWD = Portuguese Water Dogs.

Read all about them at www.pwdca.org

They aren't the easiest breed in the world. To understate the matter. :)

Very high energy (need at least an hour of hard exercise daily), very smart (they can open refrigerators and turn on faucets, excel in obedience and agility, there are a couple who are Search & Rescue dogs, and some who are service dogs), very mouthy (need a plush toy in their mouth all the time). These are NOT couch potatoes.

Very people oriented. They were bred to work with Portugese fishermen on small boats and they like to stay *close* to their person. They say you never go the bathroom alone when you have a PWD. True.

A high maintanence coat. Needs regular grooming (brush, bath and cut). On the up side, they are basically non-shedding. Of course, I had the cocker before we got the PWD, so I've never felt her grooming requirements were that bad. But then, cockers are among the higher maintanence coats out there. And they shed.

Generally great with children, as long as they are properly socialized. My PWD adores DS, and puts up with all kinds of indignities to play with him - though we do limit what DS does to her. She appointed herself his guardian when he came home, and slept by his crib during naps.

Generally speaking, they aren't easy to find. Less than 2500 are born every year, and most breeders are very responsible and very protective of their dogs. Be prepared to wait for a year or even more to get a puppy. But you'll have the breeder to rely on for the life of the dog. I'm still in touch regularly with my PWD's breeder, and she's been helpful with issues with my cocker too (who is a rescue).

Email me through the boards or at obedcocker at yahoo.com if you want any more info! I LOVE to talk dogs.
