Ever since DD was born her size has tracked well with clothing sizes, 12-18 months were big at 12 months getting a little small at 18 etc, (except trousers which were always a litttle long). Now she's 6 weeks of her second birthday and I've been gradually stocking up on stuff for spring and summer in 2T. These tops all seem small, like they fit her right now and seem pretty snug around the buddha belly, there's no way after theyre washed that she's going to be fitting them still in a few months.
It seems crazy to buy 3T when she's not 2. Is she turning into a monster baby or is there something up with 2T sizing?

I think it depends on where you buy the clothes. Eva is about 34" tall and weighs about 26 pounds. She fits into a 2T at Gymboree but after asking about Land's End sizing in a different thread I am going to order a 3T from Land's End for my not yet 2 year old as well.

2T is slimmer than 24 months. Her belly will go away as she gets closer to 3 years old.

I have a top that was getting tight on Logan at the end of last summer, but it put it on her at Christmas in Florida and it fit again. She slimmed down through the torso a little and a lot in her belly. She'll be 2 next month.

Are you sure about that? I was under the impression that 2T and 3T allowed for extra room in the diaper area and the clothes did not get slimmer umtil the T was dropped as in a size 3, the idea being a size 3 did not allow for extra room for a diaper because most kids potty trained around age 3.

I have a monster baby :) I'm buying 3t or 3 tops for her right now. She's got a big belly that I have to cover. She's in 2T pants though and they're usually long on her since she has short legs. Each brand is different though. I can't even buy Old Navy for her since everything is so tight on her.

Karen is correct. A 2T is slimmer than a 24 month size, not because of diaper room, but because children generally tend to slim down and start to lose their baby bellies by age 2. Now you are correct that a size 2 (without the T, made by some companies), would be slimmer and ALSO have less diaper room than a 2T.

So from widest to least wide would be 24 month, 2T and 2. A 2T and a 2 would also likely be longer than a 24 month size in length of pants, sleeve length and torso length.

Now you are making me nervous, this child eats like there is no tomorrow her belly is getting bigger if anything. DH keeps joking at meals asking when I'm going to 'cut her off'.
I have the distinct impression that the 2T tops are only as wide as the 18-24 but a bit longer so what you are saying makes sense. Pity they don't make 24-30 months,

I was thinkig of tops moreso than bottoms, but yes the bottoms get slimmer too.

In fact, some of the Naartjie size 3 pants are the same size as their size 18-24M except for the length. (which is why people are buying the size 3 capris and using them as full length pants now)

Actually I was one of the people who bought the size 3 capris in Gymbo and the adjustable waist is what made that possible. The waist was larger than Eva's Gymbo pants in 18-24 month pants. I know nothing about Naartjie though!

I have a niece who always needs tops in one size bigger than bottoms. That may turn out to be the case for my DD too, I'm sensing. So it may be correct for you to buy 3T in tops.

Liam wears a size bigger in tops than bottoms. When I buy outfits with pants, I just know I'm going to have to cuff or hem the pants. But, his torso and arms are VERY long relative to his legs. Right now, at 16 months, the sleeves of all his 12-18 month shirts are short. (he can wear 24 month tops now) But he still fits into a lot of his 12 month pants- only recently did I uncuff many of his 18 month pants. From posts I've read here, that seems *somewhat* common, but not typical.
