Ok, this should be over in the lounge, but I so rarely go over there that I wanted to post here. Hope that's okay!
Today is Ashton's 6th Birthday!!! Hard to believe how time flies when you're having fun!!!! If someone had told me before I got pregnant how much fun, how exhausting, how much joy and how many tears I would shed watching my baby boy grow up into a big kid, I would have never believed it! And he's just that, a big kid - no longer a baby, though a baby he will always remain to me. With all the trials and tears this child has put me through with his disability, I've come through it with a great respect for him as well. He's a very intelligent kid, he just learns it differently than other kids. He's overcome great odds (we were actually told when he was first diagnosed that he was severely autistic) to become the wonderful (most of the time!! ) little guy he is today. today, 3.5yrs after his initial diagnosis through the school district his dx has went from severely autistic to high-functioning autistic, with the possibility of it changing to Asperger's or PDD-NOS next year. Sure, he's still autistic but a lot of times his autistic traits are no longer noticeable as he struggles daily with learning to calm himself and deal with the world in appropriate ways. He's been my shining star since the moment I laid my eyes on him 6yrs ago. That thick dark head-ful of hair that was the talk of the hospital nursery (and the family!) and that smile that seemed apparent from the moment he was born! He's always been cautious (even before he was born, his arm was up by his head, we say he was making sure he had a place to"land" LOL) but with that, he's learned to do things perfectly before moving on.
So today will be a day of spoiling for the little guy - from the moment he wakes up. He's getting his FAVORITE breakfast in the world (McDonald's OJ and hashbrowns) and then he has OT services, where his OT said she was going to have him decorate a big chocolate chip cookie (his favorite treat!). Then of course today I'll be bringing a treat in for his birthday at snacktime (and what else, but MORE chocolate chip cookies! LOL) I'm gonna let him pick his favorite dinner tonight and we might go eat it out at MILs or my DH's grandparents, as DH is up in NOVA for 2days for a conference for work (i was pissed to say the least).
So, Happy 6th Birthday sweet guy and keep smiling!!! Mommy, Daddy and Holden love you very very much and we always will!
