I am in the process of making several Jon Jons for my little one. I found a great pattern - McCalls 2033. The only "difficult" sewing is the button hole!

Some ideas:
Use solid color Pique fabric or gingham and once you quickly sew it together, have the front monogrammed in a contrast color thread. You can look at home party brands for monogram style ideas. For a short Jon Jon you'd only need about 1 1/2 yards fabric (so around $5), and around here a monogram place would charge $6-8 to do a medium size initials on the front chest.
If you can applique or smock, you can come up with a lot of different combinations
