Did anyone see this opinion piece regarding judge Roberts' families attire in the Washington Post?

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2005/07/21/AR2005072102347.html

Basically, the author says that the outfits the children were wearing were costumes from a by-gone era. His son was wearing a seersucker shorts-suit and his daughter was wearing a yellow dress with lace-trimmed anklets and black maryjanes.

I would like to know what the heck is wrong with dressing your children CUTE and APPROPRIATELY? (ie - NO flip-flops!) The author would FREAK if she saw what I dress my little boy in! : )

What a nasty article. Doesn't surprise me though - this is pretty much why I stopped subscribing to the Post.

If the son had been in a Little Lord Fauntleroy velvet suit, I could see a point. But the kids are dressed absolutely appropriately for the occasion and the weather. Probably too much for the idiot to comprehend. grrrrrr.

If the Robert's were on an outing to the zoo, I would say they were a bit over-dressed. To meet with the President, it looks like the children were dressed appropriately to me. What did the author expect them to be dressed in? Jean shorts and t-shirts? I would much rather see parents who have taken the time to dress not only themselves, but also their children appropriately for the occaision.

What a nasty mean spirited article. I am a rabid democrat. I understand if you are a Supreme Court nominee they are going to rip you apart. That is part of the political process, but trashing the kids clothes -WTF??? If my child was going to meet the president I would have put her in white mary janes :), but otherwise everything was what I would have done. Especially the shorts-suit, that was too cute!

I think the kids were dressed in adorable outfits - very cute and classy. However, I also thought the article was a bit humorous. It's one person's opinion and I can see some of the points. It is frightening to think about how young this nominee happens to be. I think I'd feel more comfortable if those were his grandkids as he's likely to sit on the bench for decades.

I do not agree with the authors opinion at all. I think the kids were dressed very apropriate. Can you imagine them standing up there in light up tennis shoes...please!

I think the kids look cute and are dressed at the same level of formality as their parents (and as the occasion warrants). The author of the article was looking to find fault, and "found" some.

Had the kids been in more casual clothing (say, a sundress and khakis/short sleeved dress shirt) he probably would have said they were horribly underdressed and trying to be very "down home" at the White House.

It's too bad when the children of people in politics get pulled into the fray. Remember poor awkward 13-14 year old Chelsea Clinton being compared to the "perfect" blond Gore children? Looks like she turned out just fine though!

Best,
Mary

Our newspaper (Palm Beach Post) had an article on Friday saying the kids were dressed beautifully for the occasion and in fact, ran a whole little piece on seersucker suits and where to find them. They also said that the little boys outfit looked like something Jackie Kennedy would have put John in.
By the way, they estimated the cost of the outfit at $330.

I thought the kids look adorable and were dressed appropriately for meeting the President. Geesh! Remember when they made a big stink about Martha Stewart wearing a pink leather pantsuit to a WH dinner??

I thought the children looked wonderfully appropriate. They looked neat and classy for the occasion.

What's funny is that my DH always referred to my kids clothes as costumes. He still does it with the grandkids. When changing our new GS he told me to get him a new costume b/c that one was wet!

I thought they both looked adorable, but the highlight for me was when his DS got fidgety during the speeches, and started dancing and hopping in place onstage. (The Secret Service discreetly and promptly escorted his wife and the children offstage!)

I thought they looked very White Houseish. Little Jack totally looked like little John-John and he was SO cute! :P at the writer!

I also thought it reminded me of something Jackie O would've dressed little John in. :)

My mom thought I was a nut for getting all offended at this article. I don't have a problem with GapKids, but the author implied that "modern" childrens clothing comes from such retailers. Well, yes - but much more CASUAL than I'd ever dress DS for a meeting with the Pres. I think, in fact, that casual clothiers are what's making people think flip-flops are dressy enough for a trip to the White House!

What a dork! Those children were perfectly dressed for the occasion! Good grief, they were at the White House, not McDonalds! My DS went to church last week in a seersucker jon-jon and was barefoot only because it was nearly 100 degrees and he's 9 months old!!

If I see one more person wearing flip-flops in church, I may have to confront them!

I will go so far as to say the NASTY remarks made about her by Republicans have forever impacted my opinion of the GOP. I still remember Rush Limbaugh holding up that picture of her and saying that the White House was getting a new dog. In 1996, the county GOP convention in my area was selling shirts that compared her to a dog. What made me so disgusted was that I did not just hear that from loud mouths like Rush----it trickled down the party to the point were I was hearing it from otherwise nice people at church. You know, when Reagan died during my state's Democratic Convention the floor came to a complete halt with a moment of utter silence to honor him. The shirts and buttons and pins sold at that convention honored/plugged Democrats or attacked politicans but did not touch the children or spouses. I have never heard a nasty attack comment made about the Bush twins while in Democratic politics...some jokes about the underage drinking thing a few years ago but nothing calling them animals/sluts/ugly which I heard so often about Chelsea from not just the shock jocks but from party activists at all levels.

ETA: This is not to say that there are not nasty mean Democrats out there...just that IMO the meanness directed at Chelsea has not been repeated with the Bush twins from the other side. And I know plenty of great Republicans that did not/would not take part in the nasty campaign against Chelsea and Hilary.

We have a nice suit for Toby and the entire outfit was about $100 from the Wooden Soldier. It is IMP Creations which you see in a lot of boutiques but I am sure that the Roberts family went to a fancier designer! Just trying to point out that nice clothes are availabe at all price points...from $30 suits at Sears to $100 outfits like we have to the $300 pieces...being dressed up is not limited (as the article meanly suggests) to the rich.

I agree that it's a nasty article. But the author has a habit of being nasty; I've seen her write many articles like this. I don't generally follow the fashion column, but she wrote an infamous column about 8 or 10 years ago when she first joined the Washington Post. She slammed Washington women for wearing running shoes with their suits (while walking from the metro) and said it was horribly unfashionable. Of course it's unfashionable, but it is comfortable. Her attitude about it was so incredibly snotty that she received ALOT of backlash from it. She drives me nuts!

that is the most ridiculous article I have ever read. It didn't even make sense and her argument is riddled with flaws. She sounds bitter and jealous, IMO. What a waste of ink.

Someone should tell her that of the "attire from the commonly accepted styles of this century," seersucker has been in fashion for over one hundred years. It is consistently revived as a "summer trend" every few years. In fact, The Palm Beach Post had a front page article in the living section on how to dress little boys like Jack Roberts just days after this press conference.

ITA with you. I would dress my ds like that for a proper occasion such as this, or a wedding, or going to church. What were they supposed to wear to the White House, jeans???

Edited for spelling

Well, if the way Jack and Josie were dressed was wrong, then I don't want to be right. ;)
