DD is due in August. Ever since discovering Hanna, I've thought about bringing baby home in the simple pink/white stripe zipper. I'm thinking that even though it will be August, it will be appropriate, since we'll be in the A/C in the hospital, car, and home. Right? I can't imagine bringing an infant home in just a onesie or similar.

DS was a March baby, so it was a bit different, but I feel like I'm learning how to do this all again! :)

Smart thinking. I wasted quite a bit of money on summery outfits for Dd who was a summer baby. She was rarely outside and mostly in air-conditioned buildings or cars so most were never used. A zipper is a great coming-home outfit.

I was wondering how much summery stuff to buy - with DS I recall hibernating indoors for a few weeks with the exception of taking walks. I'm thinking we'll pick up a few summery things but mainly lightweight sleepers and similar.

Thanks for the reassurance!

I guess it depends on where you live. My last baby was born in August and I'm in GA and she would have roasted in a zipper. I brought her home in this:

It was perfect. Nice and cool and pretty and she wore it to church when she was a week old. It was so hot for so long she lived in daygowns and diaper shirt sets. She would have been way too hot in a sleeper, even in the air conditioning. I bought every light cotton gown I could find and they were wonderful.

We are in the Chicago area. Hmmm. That's why I'm stumped. I don't want to waste a lot of money on summery stuff I won't use, but I worry that I'm not being realistic. It is cool here by October and Sept is up and down but August can be hot, so I might not get much use out of summery stuff. I suppose I'll leave the tags on and keep the receipts and see how it goes.

Thanks.

:) I'm still considering what my new name will be, but yes, it might need to change!

Lovingliv - were you on the Due In April SK boards? I thought I remembered you from there.

Really? I have photos of my DS wearing shorts and sweltering at MDO in the first weeks of October last year. There is no "usual" weather in Chicago anymore these days. FWIW, my DD was born in May and spent her first summer exclusively in short-sleeve rompers.

Very true. I love fall, so perhaps I'm wishing it cooler by October! :) I'll be safe and go with some of each, I suppose!

I never used Hanna till DS was close to a year. Good to know. I'm guessing this one will be no more than 7 pounds or so when she comes at 38 weeks based on how our families are, (of course, who knows!). Hmmm...

My DD was a preemie so I can't guess based on age, but she didn't really fit into her 50s until she weighed around 10 pounds.

Hmm, we're in Chicago too and we spent the entire months of August and September outside on looooooong walks (colicky DD would not nap any other way). I had thin (but soft) cotton onesies and some thin pants for outside, or she wore a diaper cover and had a very thin blanket blocking the sun in her stroller. Zippers made her sweaty outside. I wouldn't go crazy with summer clothes, but you'll probably want to be outside a bit when it is nice in September and October because we all know it will change in a flash (like our lovely April snow today).

Thanks! I was at the Carter's store yesterday and picked up onesies and matching cotton pants. I have a feeling they will come in useful - adding pants when we need or just cute onesies when it is hot.

I can't believe I'm overthinking this so much, but I really like being prepared and having what I need! I need to relax about it already! :)

I'm also expecting another girl in August and I bought the Door to the Garden romper for her to wear home unless I find something I like better. My first DD was born July 28 and we took her home from the hospital on a day that was in the high 90s and humid (we live in upstate NY, so similar climate to Chicago). I think a zipper would be too hot, even in a/c, because they are fairly thick cotton. DD#1 wore mostly short sleeve one pieces with long pants for her first 6-8 weeks. If we were in a/c, I just wrapped her in a blanket.

That romper is adorable AND on sale. Hmmm... I have some more browsing to do!

Thanks for the insight - I think your weather is probably pretty much the same as ours. I have a feeling I'll leave for the hospital with a few outfits in my bag!

I wish I had known about Naartjie when Kate was a newborn. Check out the website!

I have 6 items in my cart and I think I'm going to have to give them a try! Based on the raves Naartjie gets around here, I'm in big trouble! I never really looked at them before, primarily because they never had shopping on the website and I wasn't in love with the boy stuff. But this girlie stuff is adorable! Uh oh!
