Thinking about boy's summer sandals for a 15 (now) month old. Do you find closed toe important for protecting their toes at this age? If so, that limits the options. I know there are some from Stride Rite, anyone know of others? Also nubuck/leather or nylon for breathability/rubbing issues?? TIA!

When DS was that age he didn't like anything with open toes. We had See Kai Runs which we both loved and alternated them with Lands End mesh water shoes for breathability.

We live in Hawaii, so we wear sandals year-round and I just don't care for open-toe sandals for a number of reasons. When he was a new walker, I didn't like the idea of him falling and scraping his toes. It seemed to me that it was more likely to happen with open toe sandals. Anyway, like the pp said, ds wore See Kai Run sandals and we loved them. Actually, that's the only sandals he's ever worn and he's 2.5 now! We've been through 3-4 pairs so far. They are so soft and no danger of blisters or anything. :)

Thank you. I was thinking the same thing about the open-toed sandals. There are so many of them out there though. I will check out see Kia run for closed toe options.

Closed toes made a big difference for us at that age since he was a new walker and stumbling a lot and occasionally still crawling.

We had these and really liked them:

This year we got the same stride rite ones and a pair of keens:

Thanks! You didn't find that the leather on the SR cut into DS's foot? Also, does the rubber front make them trip in the Keen's at all?

My DS is/was pretty skinny so his feet definately weren't chubby - the sandals weren't tight at all and we didn't have any trouble with the leather cutting into him.

So far he's worn the Keen's a handful of times (not really that warm yet here) but no problems that I've seen when he walks in them. He loves his "blue shoes!" ;)

We use Stride Rites for Ds, buying Wide or Extra-Wides. Usually the cute little ones with the cut-outs don't come in XW, but the more basic ones will. Dd has SRs and See Kai Run fishermans (they come in red - so cute!). Ds also had Elefantens so I would imagine Umis come that way and they run wider that SRs. Eccos have a fisherman style as well.

My DS is 4 and I still prefer that he wear closed-toe sandals. At 15-months, I wouldn't consider anything else.

When DS first started walking, he wore the closed-toe sandals from Stride Rite (went through 2 pairs in his first summer) and they were great. Now he wears Keens, but I don't think they are really flexible enough for young walkers.

Thanks, looks like a lot of votes for the SR's. I don't know why they make so many open toed sandals for babies! Glad I checked here first.

Good luck! LIke a pp said, I would never have put ds in open toed sandals at 15 months--still won't at 2.5. :) But that's just my personal preference. I seriously don't think you can go wrong with SKRs. SRs may be a little bit stiffer to walk in which is why we didn't do them at that age.

yup, still doing closed toed/soft soled here at almost 2y.o. at your son's age, mine looovvved his pediped colin's (they have them again this year, but in brown instead of blue). we had harvey's too, and they were a close second to the colin's last year. he still reaches for the pedipeds before anything else.

DS is 16.5 months old and wore his crocs today. He loved them.
