So, we have DS's fireman costume pretty complete and now he wants to be a garbageman. Um, our waste disposal personnel wear jeans with t-shirts, not even logo shirts that I can tell. I'm thinking some type of jumpsuit either blue or grey, like a mechanic. I'll try to find leather or canvas work gloves and see if we can find him some black or brown boots. I do have small garbage bags so we have the "loot" bag covered.

Any suggestions where to get a 4t jumpsuit? The guy at Ace hardware grinned and directed me to party america which I plan to go to tomorrow, but I don't see any garbageman costumes on the web so not holding out hope for a party store.

Are plain jumpsuits out there and I just don't see them - we don't shop the brand stores too often, but I have a Carters, TCP, and Hanna around.

eta: We're in fairly warm country, so I don't need a heavy material, I was thinking denim or twill or that type.

There are some good ideas here http://www.dance.net/topic/5609462/1/Costumes/Looking-for-a-janitors-outfit-for-6-dancers-that-are-age-7-through-10.html&replies=8
The most promising one might be if you can find a Michael Myers costume at the party store.

I'm glad your DS knows what he wants to be. My DS isn't sure yet.

Thanks for the suggestions. I had thought to find an existing costume (pilot, police, darth vader?, etc.) and trying to take off patches, etc., but hadn't found any used ones. I'll try the party store tomorrow and see what they have. We have several Spirit stores around here, but I don't want to pay full price unless it is good quality and he could use it for dress up down the road.

DH suggested just using jeans and white t-shirt - maybe with "City Garbage" in iron-ons on the back. Those with the gloves and garbage bag will probably get the idea across (plus DS saying "I'm a garbage man" will help the cause.)

5 months ago DS wanted to be an owl and the only costumes I could find at the time were Hedwig which I'm not crazy about. 4 months ago he wanted to be a fireman and he stuck with that for a long time and we got the Carter's fireman rainjacket with Halloween in mind. The garbage man idea came up about a month or so ago and we've been trying to get back to the fireman idea with no sucess. We're going trick or treating this weekend at a somewhat local theme park and I hope to have his costume ready (not required). My real deadline is the following Thursday when we have a party at work for the kids.

Thanks again for the ideas.

I think your jeans with shirt/iron-ons idea is your best bet. Cheaper and easier! Could you use the actual name of your city? That would be cute. And I'd put it on the front too so it would be visible when he trick-or-treats at doors.

Cute!

I asked DS what garbage men wore and he told me a coat so they don't get dust on them. Not sure what type of coat he is thinking about.

Our city name is 8 letters long and I can't follow a straight line so I'm hesitant about doing the iron-ons at all, so I'm trying to minimize the number of letters. (I know, what a wimp!)

I also hesitate to put the word "trash" or "garbage" on DS without a qualifier, hence "city". Plus, we live in one city but he'll do most of his trick or treating at my folks who live in another city. "Waste management" is way too long and would wrap around his little body.

I'm still hoping for a jumpsuit or coverall, but then I still need to add the letters. Maybe I can use stencils and spray paint. Do they make fabric paint in a spray can? A trip to Michaels is in my immediate future.

Thanks for the support!

Some kind of coverall (Carhartt brand specifically) came to mind, although our garbage people wear jeans & tees too. DD has some kids work gloves from Home Depot that would be the right "look" I think. We got them last spring. I'm not sure where you are, but a store like Bass Pro Shops or Cabela's or someplace like Tractor Supply or Farm & Family might be good bets. Maybe even Walmart.

Here are some tan overalls at Cabela's:

Jeans at Bass Pro Shops:

Same overalls as above but at BPS:

Payless has some work boots that would work (in toddler & youth sizes):

I found these same coveralls at a few sites after googling "kids coverall" - maybe one of the solid ones would work with the right boots/gloves/etc.

Thanks for the links for overalls and shoes. We do have a feed store in the next city over, plus I thought I'd try OSH or Home Depot to see what they have.

When we lived in TX we often took our visitors to Bass Pro at DFW.
