My pumping has not produced the quantity I would have expected. I noticed the other day that the shield only covered the first little bit of my arreola (sp?). When I removed the shield and squeezed farther down on my arreola, milk squirted everywhere. When I tried pumping again, I got next to nothing.

So, in your opinion, does it sound like I need different shields? I looked on Medela's website and see they have Large Breastshields and Extra Large Breastshields. Does anyone know what comes standard with the pump? How do I determine which ones I would need?

The size of the actual horns is all the same, what varies is the diameter of the tunnel that your nipple is pulled into.

A larger tunnel will pull more of your nipple in, compressing farther back on your areola. If you want it to compress more towards your nipple, you want a smaller size. They make soft inserts that change the size of the tunnel to be smaller, maybe that is what you want.

Or am I not understanding what you mean?

I think I need a larger tunnel. I do have large nipples and have noticed that very little of my arreola gets compressed.

Does this make sense?

Yes that makes sense. Try calling Medela's customer service line and explain it to them, they can probably tell you what size you need.
