What and when do you start stepping up from "mush" type foods? My DS is 6.5 months and seems to prefer the thickest things I serve him (baby food/cereal/sweet potatoe).

When do you use teething biscuits or similar things?

Is there a good book that deals with this issue? I want to move away frm baby food ony (make some of my own) but I am not sure where to begin.

TIA

Colin started on solids around 6 months, and from day one, we made his oatmeal veeeerrrrry thick. We offered Cheerios around 7 months, and he quickly figured out how to snarf them up. Thus our days of self-feeding and table foods began.

I'd say go ahead and offer him a few things that don't require much chewing (Cheerios mush up quickly in the mouth, shredded cheese is good, too) and see how he reacts. He might be ready, and he might not, but the only way to know is to try!

DS was eating Oatios, very ripe pear, very ripe banana, sweet potato, and very overcooked carrots and broccoli by 6 months. He really liked feeding himself.

A great chart to go by for solids is found on Dr. Sears' website:
