I saw in some posts that Avent bottles are "breastfeeding friendly" - can someone please tell me why?

thanks,

Because they have a wide base...when your baby is sucking from the nipple she is also pushing against the wide base as though it was a breast. Of course, it doesn't mean all BF babies will like it...mine likes the Playtex...but the breastfeeding friendly nipple as well. Looks just like the avent, but the plastic is more supple...which she likes. It's all about the baby's preference. Don't buy too many of one kind until you know if she will take it.

And from my experience, breastmilk doesn't foam up in Avent bottles, but formula does! Especially Similac for some reason. I get at least an inch of foam every time I feed! I prefer the Dr. Brown's to Avent. They also have a wide mouth bottle.

I think the shape of the bottle nipple doesn't "confuse" them as much so that they can still latch onto the breast.
I have to admit that DD is a contradiction to this since we use regular Dr. Brown's and have never had a problem of latching on. I didn't know about wide-mouth bottles until after we started using the regular ones and it seemed silly to buy new bottles since DD was fine on the other ones.

Hi Lisa,

Yes I think it's because of the wide base. I tried these with one of my sons (when they first came out -they were hard to find!) back in 1994 but he hated them! Since then I've used the wide 'disposable bottle' nipple made by Nuk (not the one by playtex). To me that is more breastfeeding friendly.
My current baby has not had a bottle yet - but I'll try both Avent and the Nuk nipple and see what he prefers.

Here is a link to a pic of the Nuk ones: http://www.gerber.com/prodcat?catid=453

The lactation specialist/nurse who ran the breastfeeding class I took before I had DD said that the two bottle nipples on the market that are the most similar to human breasts/nipples are the Avent and the Playtex Ultra. I believe she said it was mainly because of the shape of the nipple/base and the softness of the materials. I went with the Avent line because several other moms I know recommended it as well and I've been totally happy with them. (One thing I will recommend though is to make sure you follow Avent's instructions for putting the nipple/ring together, otherwise you end up with leaking bottles. My husband found that out the hard way! :+ )

They are "breastfeeding friendly" because that makes good advertising copy and sells more bottles.

Any nipple that gets baby to open wide and flange his lips out is similar to breastfeeding.
