Since October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, I wanted to pass on the information that I learned today. I was prescribed antibiotics (Augmentin) last week for mastitis. However, the symptoms have not improved after a week, so my doctor has referred me to a breast disorder specialist and scheduled me for a mamogram (I'm only 30, so it is not routine). There is a very agressive type of breast cancer called Inflamatory Breast Cancer that is often misdiagnosed as mastitis. Symptoms include redness, swelling and pain, but not necessarily a lump. For more symptoms, please see the following link:

If you have symptoms of mastitis that do not improve after a course of antibiotics, this is definitely something you should discuss with your doctor!

Thank you for the information, Jennifer! I hope you turn out to have just a particularly bad bout of mastitis!

Thanks for this information Jennifer! I was a recurrent mastitis sufferer, but seem to have it under control now (fingers crossed). I hope and pray that all turns out OK for you and you feel better soon.

Jennifer,

How scary! I hope your tests come back negative. Best of luck and I'll be thinking of you.
