I'm only 14w, and it's getting warmer! None of my old shorts fit, and maternity shorts are toooo big right now... do I break down and buy regular shorts that are a few sizes up? But they look so hokey since they're big everywhere... what to wear that's cute and fits well? Are there maternity clothes for the first half of pregnancy?

thanks!!

Hi Susan --

I was in the same situation as you this time last year. I found some nice stuff at Motherhood...I bought several pairs of drawstring linen pants (capris and full-length). They fit great from when I started showing up until the fall, when I got really big. They didn't look out of proportion or anything. And the best part, for me, was that they were only around $20 a pair!

I'm not a shorts kind of girl anyway, so I didn't buy any until it got really hot in the summer.

HTH!

I found the most comfy thing was to get the under-belly style maternity shorts and just wear them w/ the band around my waist. Or you can try the rubber band trick w/ your regular shorts - wrap a rubber band around the button, slip it through the button hole, then put it back around the button. That got me through for a while. Good luck - this part of the pregnancy is the hardest for figuring out what to wear!

I know a lot of mamas have used a bella band in the beginning of their pregnancies to wear their prepregnancy clothing while in-between sizes. You may also want to look into the bellyhugger. I believe it is similar to the bella band, but cheaper. They both allow you to wear your normal pants/shorts unbuttoned.

I wore ON pants and shorts with low-rise waistbands early on with DS, and I'm doing the same now. The waistband sits just below my hips, and the fabric the bottoms are made of is nice and stretchy (I don't usually like that about ON pants, but it's great for maternity). I don't know if this would work if you have a long rise (mine is short) but it's something to try out...and ON's prices are good.

I wore a lot of skirts at that time. I could keep them partially unzipped and it worked well. Casual ones, dressy ones for work - I found that they just laid smoother than pants.

I did have old navy capri pants that had some elastic that worked out great. They were under the belly type pants.

I had some fold-over waistband pants from motherhood that I lived in. They were a gauze-y material, and felt like pajama pants but looked dressy so I could wear them to work.

The only shorts I wore were exercise-type shorts to do yard work or go to the gym or go walking or jogging, which have an elastic band anyhow. I was living in Florida at the time and usually just wore capri pants or skirts.
