Sound & Lights Monitor - Suggestions for clear signal?

My wife and I originally had the Fisher Price vibrating monitor, but it did not give us a clear signal at all (actually, we couldn't hear a thing except for static). So, we returned it and recently bought the Sound & Lights monitor. The reception is perfectly clear when I hold the receiver, but as soon as I put it down, there is a lot of static. Is there a trick to correct this? I'm using a battery in the receiver - maybe having it plugged in would help? I hope I can figure out a way to make it work, because the reception is so clear when I hold the receiver. If not, I'll have to return it and continue the search. Thanks.

You might have a defective monitor. We had the exact same problem with the first Sound & Lights monitor we got. We exchanged it for another one - and this one is fine.

I always got better reception with my FP monitor when it was plugged in rather than on batteries. That was kind of a pain though, so it might be worth trying another one.
