I am going to a birthday party on saturday for a close friend's 2 year old son. Well, he's turning two. I haven't a clue what to get him - last year we got him a Neurosmith Block guy, but this year I can't afford to spend that much. Any suggestions on an affordable but cool toy?

Most two year olds LOVE Playdoh. While its not "cool", it is nice, and Playdoh "goes bad" after awhile, so its a consumable. You can get nifty Playdoh gift packages at Target or TRU with a couple cans of Playdoh and some accessories like cutters, etc.

If you belong to Sam's Club, there is currently a nice Playdoh gift pack for sale for around $15.

My nephew liked wooden blocks at around that age. There are some nice ones here: http://www.unclegoose.com/BlocksMain.html Also, how about Legos or Duplos or something else to build with? I'm not sure how cool this is, but it might be neat and it was on sale for $15 when I was at TRU last week -- a grill by Little Tikes: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/stores/detail/-/toys/B000084JMV/qid=1059535630/sr=2-1/ref=sr_2_1/002-3975968-8507241

Thanks everyone for the good ideas. I never even THOUGHT of play doh! Geez, I'm so used to things that whistle and bleep. A quiet toy would be a nice change.
