I'm looking for a quality rocking horse. Something simple - no colors or fabric, but classic. Anyone have any recommendations? Also, at what age is a wooden rocking horse appropriate?

We got ours at Zainy Brainy. It was the only model they carried at the time. It is natural wood and brown yarn hair, very simple. I think I put it together when DD was a little under a year old. She was too young at that time, but quickly learned to use it by herself at around 18 months. At almost 2 1/2 this is still one of her favorite toys. :)

I can't help you, but I have to tell my little story.

When I told my Grandparents I was expecting I asked my Grandfather to make a rocking horse for the baby. I have the one he made me, but I wanted one that was for my child/ren. He went to some craft shows to check out some. He made a pattern and started on it. In June they gave Jude a picture of it and said it needed one more coat of varnish. A few weeks later he died suddenly. The rocking chair was in the middle of his workshop, his favorite place in the house other than his chair that he died in. My Grandmother put on the coat of varnish and the rocking horse is in the middle of our living room.

Ok, I am teary now, but smiling.

As sad as it is, that is such a nice story. I'm sorry to hear about your loss. Jude will always have something to remember his Great Grandpa by. Thank you for sharing.

I would say 18 months to 2 years is the general age range for a rocking horse. I'm really not sure about the quality of this one, but I just saw Radio Flyer's rocking horse in TRU and it is pretty classic looking. http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B00005YVT3/qid=1066789142/sr=1-2/ref=sr_1_2/102-7268501-5227319?v=glance&s=toys It got good reviews on Amazon. You might have decent luck checking at a locally owned toy store. The one near me generally has more classic toys.

BabyStyle has one that looks pretty good. They used to have two, one of which was extremely well priced, but I can only find this one now:

My dad is making my DD her's, but from what I've seen while doing research on them, the price of this one seemed pretty reasonable. I believe the recommended minimum age on most is 18 months.

Does anyone has this rocking horse form babystyle? It looks cute and not too expensive. I would like to get Madison a rocking horse for X-mas.

Plow and Hearth has one that looks darling. My mom just ordered it for Ben and I can't wait to see it. Pricewise, I don't know... seems expensive.

We have one by brio, not sure where you can find one but maybe their website shows possibly where one can be bought?
http://www.brio.net

After that i would guess alot of craft shows would have choices, for ages probably about 12mths and up walking would be best, helps with the on/off.

Good luck we intend on keeping ours after the kids are done..grandkids? ;)

Hi,

I wanted to say that I have the Babystyle wooden rocking horse. We bought it for our little girl for her first b-day. She started using it shortly after. She is a little small for her age.

I do want to point out something I thought was very important.

The babystyle horse aka "Harvey the Horse" has a peice of wood behind where the baby sits. So basically when he or she is rocking and they will rock pretty hard as they get older, that peice of wood helps to keep them from sliding off!

That part of the horse is my favorite, so I don't need to worry as much. I do like the Hearth and Plow horse, and I almost got that one, but the Babystyle one "Harvey the Horse" is priced great and our daughter loves it. I love it too because of that area of the seat that helps to keep her from sliding right off the back.

I hope that helps!

Hi Everyone, Just an update....

A few days ago my mom delivered the rocking horse from Plow and Hearth -- WE LOVE IT. It is charming, adorable and a great addition to Ben's room. My mom said ordering was fast/easy and shipped fast. She even got Benjamin's name embroidered on the seat part. It is so cute... the cutest one I have seen. The quality is great, too. Very sturdy.

Julie,

Thanks for the update. I still haven't decided for sure. I'm debating between the Plow and Hearth horse and this one I found on ebay. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=1197&item=3154750172

I'm going to have to decide soon, because Christmas is just around the corner.
