For DS1's 1st birthday, we gave him the Kangaroo Climber by Step 2.

He loved it. Being in Chicago where half of the year is unsuitable for outdoor play, we kept it in the living room, and it took up 1/4 of the space there. (I kind of resigned to the idea that our house would be full of primary color plastic toys early on. lol).

For DS2's 1st birthday, we went the "frugal" route. (And really, how many toys does a kid need? lol) We got him a very basic ride-on toy by Little Tikes. No lights or sounds. He seems to like it a lot. He esp. likes to push it around like a walker.

He also received Ball Popper from Santa and everyone in the family loves that toy! I myself could sit there and play with it for a while.

We went to a party for a 1 year old and a hit was the Leap Frog basketball hoop. He also has a Fisher-Price riding toy that has a hoop on it for balls that was a hit.

It does depend on your budget, but here are some options:

LT Deluxe Cozy Convertible
Parents Busy Park Playground
Sand & Water Table
Gertie Ball
Chicco Play 'n Ride Train

Alex's first b-day party was this weekend (I agree - WHAAAAA!) and he is madly, passionately, completely in love with his Radio Flyer Walker Wagon. I don't know if you have this, but my normally mild mannered kid will arch his back and yell if we attempt to take him from this toy. Of course, he's not walking yet and he can walk with this so that might be why. Other favorites have been pretty standard from the boards - loves his Little People Farm and Train, loves most of his Leap Start stuff. I know the wagon will be going outside once it's warm enough so if you don't have it, I do recommend it.

Here are a couple of "smaller" toy ideas that my DD loves:
Melissa & Doug wooden knob puzzles http://www.target.com/gp/detail.html/sr=2-3/qid=1076426165/ref=sr_2_3/602-9861552-3167864?%5Fencoding=UTF8&asin=B000068FG7
a bear pull toy that makes music when she pulls it (we both laugh)

Linda, you might want to search on this, since its been kicked around afew times, although not so recently.

But in general, I think that good toys for a 1 year old are:

walk behind/push toy (we got the Little Tikes shopping cart and she still plays with it every day)
wooden knob puzzles
board books
wooden or plastic blocks
stacking cups
a simple shape sorter
