we bought this and dh had a heck of a time putting it together. but it seems she's not ready for it yet. i have visions of her plummeting forward or even having it fall on top of her if she falls backwards. i assume this will be appropriate when she's walking?

where do you find food for this? any recommendations?

I haven't seen it IRL, but there's a ton of adorable food in the www.discountschoolsupply.com catalog (I haven't checked online and there's a free shipping special in the paper catalog for orders over $59 until 4/30/04). There are lots of choices, including some fruits & veggies that velcro together so the child can "slice" them and see what the insides look like. Too cute! And good prices.

Mellisa and Doug make cute wooden foods...we have them and he plays with them as if they were blocks at this point, and obvioulsy not as "food"...

But I suspect they are the same as mentioned since they too have velcro...

They need to be fairly steady cruisers to play with the shopping cart; Colin got his for his birthday, but I think that he would have been able to cruise with it before he actually walked (though he was a VERY steady cruiser for quite a while before walking).

A friend found a great package of food at Meijer; unfortunately we don't have a Meijer nearby so I'm still looking for decent, inexpensive food. All TRU had was branded stuff - McDonald's, Hostess, etc - YUCK!!!

That velcro food is TOO CUTE!! I had to order some - thanks for the link!

They do have free shipping for orders $59 and up, but my $30 order was only $5 shipping, so it is pretty reasonable.

I don't have any fake food. We use empty "real" food boxes. Some favs are:

Cheerios boxes
animal crackers bixes
Goldfish boxes
empty yogurt containers

Essentially any empty food container of hers that can be washed out or cleaned is a great choice and is free!

I saw plastic food and paper boxes of cereal in the dollar store. I also found a basket full of plastic and wood fruit and veggies at Value City.

We use a combination of real food containers (empty and washed, of course) along with 2 baskets (small shopping baskets) full of plastic fruits and vegetables that I found at Big Lots. They were $3.99 each, I think, for the basket plus the plastic foods and some small food boxes. As for real food containers, so far DD likes empty spice containers w/ lids, an empty honey container (shaped like a hive), yogurt containers w/ lids, and a cardboard oatmeal canister w/ lid. DD's shopping cart (which I can't find a link to anywhere online...) also came with quite a bit of pretend food/drink items.

I am thinking of getting "food" sets from PBK or Basictoys.com

If you use real cardboard boxes, be aware that roaches lay their eggs in the glue.

Can you tell who has been to too many tupperware parties????

Thanks! He was posing today with the glasses. His new thing now is to smile and say cheese. He grabs the camera and wants me to take his picture...lol. He is such a ham!

I actually stood in awe in the middle of the "plastic food" isle at TRU today...I was simply amazed at all the branded food they had. Pizza Hut, Hostess, Dairy Queen and so much McDonalds it's disturbing. Honestly though, I would have just loved to have had all that stuff when I was little--I admit it! ;) But will I ever buy it for DD when she gets to that age? That might be another story.

I know this post is old, but I did a search and this link has a bunch of different food choices from multiple websites.
