We have some similar foam blocks and they are great! Fun and easy to build with, plus they're not noisy when they fall. They're not great if you have a child who is teething. A playgroup buddy did chew a chunk out of one block a few months ago...yikes. The small textured blocks look interesting. I know my son would like all of the different textures. Good luck making your decision.

We have a set similar to the small ones. DS likes them okay, but honestly, I'd rather have a wood set. We'll get a wood set anyway, but I'm not sure he "needs" both. He will be able to use them to build tall towers and throw the without getting hurt or hurting anyone.

I would be cautious about anything foam. My DD was a big chewer and while she doesn't mouth stuff nearly as much anymore she still can't resist taking a bite out of foam stuff (our poor Nerf soccer ball and football have had their share because I keep thinking that maybe she's outgrown it and they'll be okay to play with).

ETA: I'm not sure how big those foam blocks are, but something that was a big hit with my sister and I, our friends, and now my young cousins are the cardboard "bricks." Maybe they would be a good alternative? The direct link isn't working, but they have some at http://nursery-store.com
