keeping sandbox clean & cat free ?

hi all,

i am still debating whether to get my almost 2 year old a sandbox or a sand/water table for his birthday (this monday - nothing like planning ahead... but since i need to wait for the kettler coop, i have to get him something fun). i have read most of the posts on the pros and cons of each (although any additional input would be more than welcome!) but was wondering, for those of you who have sandboxes - the old fashioned kind just put into the ground, not the little turtle shaped things - what do you use for a lid ?? there are tons of outdoor cats in my neighborhood, and i don't want to provide them with a giant little box. but i also don't want a cover that is such a pain that i will never take it off or put it back on.

any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I have a friend whose FIL built their sandbox for them. A nice wooden one. And they just cover it with a tarp and weight it down with bricks. It's built into the bottom of a hill, too, so the whole thing is out of the way when covered.
