Our monitor really doesn't work for squat anymore, and I need a new one-- preferably one that would actually transmit a signal for any distance at all. (eyeroll) The last time I was up to date on monitor options was two years ago. Can moms who've bought one more recently let me know what works?

Our FP Sounds & Lights picks up the transmission from our neighbors across the street, who have the same one. I could hear the soap opera the other mom was watching during her daughter's nap :) They may have updated it since. We got ours last summer as a shower gift. I've been very happy with it.
Edited to say that as long as our transmitter is on, we don't pick up the neighbors' anymore.

We have the Phillips Ultra Compact Monitor. I love it cause it's small & you can charge it up, then take it around the house with you from room to room. It will clip onto your waistband & is about the size of a pager. It is quiet (doesn't pick up "white" noise) until your baby makes a sound. HTH! :)
Oh...they retail for around $50 I think, but I bought it on e-bay for about $28 including shipping.

The Philips monitor is by far the best we have tried. I also like the FP Long Range monitor. I get VERY long range with both of these.

We use the Sony BabyCall and love it. It's about $50 at TRU/BRU. Doesn't pick up anything else and has a voice activated feature so you don't have to hear everything going on in baby's room, just when they make noise or call for you.

I second the Sony BabyCall. We have this one as well, and love it too. They make two models of it - a nine channel one, and a 27 channel one. We have the 27 channel one, which is great in terms of being able to set it to just the right frequency so as not to have disturbance. I've never had it pick up anything else from another monitor or phone. As for disturbance, it just took finding the right channel for where we were at the time. (We've taken this monitor to a few different places with us.) The voice activated feature is also very nice.
I don't know exactly its distance range, since we don't have the box anymore, but it's worked well for us so far. I have yet to have it tell me it's out of range, though I can't say I've tried walking down the block with it or anything either. ;)
Now granted, with just about any monitor, this may or may not work for you. Monitors seem to be one of those things where people just love it or hate it. This one has worked very well for us though.

We just replaced our monitor too. It was a Fisher Price model that only ever worked adequately. We've been testing the Sony Baby call 9 chanel that we got to replace it (at the recommendation of everyone here) and so far it works great! No interference and clear sound. It was less expensive than some of the other recommended brands too.

We also have the Sony Baby Call monitor with 27 channels. It beeps when you are out of range. DH and I tested it all the way down to the mailbox and it worked great. I've never picked up anyone elses monitor or telephone call. And I do like how it is voice activated so I don't hear a lot of static.
