Any recommendations on a good ACCURATE baby thermometer. While the digital ear thermometers seem very convenient, I've heard that they are not accurate unless you want to spend a ridiculous amount. I'd prefer a digital thermometer in general (just for the ease). If a digital rectal thermometer is more accurate, I'd be fine with that. Also, when you recommend a particular one, can you mention where I can find it? Thanks in advance for any advice!

Get the Exergen Temporal Artery Scanner. Many people here have it and love it.

Here are a few threads extolling its virtues. The first one at least has places to buy it too.

If you click on "Search" and type in exergen you will find more.

The Exogen Temporal Artery Scanner is wonderful and it's $30 at Costco

I was going to suggest the Exergen Temporal Artery Scanner as well. I bought based upon the recommendations of the Board and I love it. There is a slight learning curve (make sure you don't pres s the button before the scanner is flat on the forehead and don't lift while scanning.) We have had the thermometer for about 2 weeks and have already mastered the curve, so really it's no big deal. I only mention it because the first couple of times you try it out the readings may be off until you get your technique down. :-)

I bought the thermometer from Costco.com for $29.99 and I am not a member. The site mentioned a 5% fee for non-members but it was not charged as far as I know. My total including shipping was around $38.

Another thumbs up for the Exergen thermometer. You can use it on newborns, a sleeping child, a child who hates and struggles with any other form of temperature taking, and it is fast and accurate. Many drs. and hospitals use it. It was one of our best purchases!

I'm so glad I read this thread. I already have a thermometer (the underarm cheapie one that works great at temps, but takes forever and is hard to keep in place with wriggly kids). But my SIL registered for the temportal artery one at BRU ($50) and I was eyeing it for myself but didn't want to spend $50, plus didn't know anything about it, like if it was any good. So, I'm glad I read the kudos and that it is cheaper at Costco. I will be heading there next week. Thanks! :)

Wish I read your post before I returned mine to Costco. I'm usually pretty good at reading and following directions but I just couldn't "get this"! Oh well, maybe I'll try again next time I'm at Costco.

Thanks everyone for the great advice. It seems like everyone is in agreement with which thermometer to get and fortunately, I belong to Costco so that makes things easier.

It's not just for babies. I use it on me and DH too.

You can use it on anyone, regardless of age. We actually were grateful for it when DD was older, and hated having her temp taking under her arm and rectal. It makes it very easy to take her temp even while she is sleeping.

As the others have said you can use it on anyone. It is very convienent. In fact the first couple of weeks after DS was born I ended up using it on myself instead of him as I had expected, because I needed to take my temp daily after my c-section to make sure I didn't have a fever. I have used it plenty of other times on DH and myself since getting it.
