As with my post about the kitchen, I'm looking for feedback on the wooden play food in the Back To Basics Toys catalog. Specifically, I'm looking at the Food Groups Sets on p. 11 of the catalog. The idea of durable wooden play food really appeals to me, as does a wooden kitchen. Anyone know other good places to find wooden play food?

I don't have a Back to Basics catalog, so I'm not sure which food you're looking at. But Melissa & Doug makes a set of wooden food that comes in a small crate. I looked at it yesterday. It's got wooden cereal, ketchup, etc and is $20.

Susan,

The Back to Basics ones sound similar. It's four wooden crates (one for each food group) filled with various food items. If I'm reading it correctly, the set of four is $20.99.

Here's a picture of the one from Back to Basics: http://www.backtobasicstoys.com/images/5160.jpg

They also have this set of dry goods:

They look really nice. I don't have any experience with them, but people here have raved about that catalog.

I also like the Melissa and Doug sliceable wooden food. A friend's son had it and we had a great time playing with it.

I found the M&D stuff on amazon, but I've seen it at Marshall's and TJ Maxx too.

The one on the bottom is the one I was thinking of.

I got DS some sliceable fruits and veggies yesterday. They're not wooden, but they are very cool. They come in a little canvas totebag.

Anna,
www.kidsurplus.com has lots of Melissa and Doug. I have also seen it at Learning Express and TJMaxx

Which - the fruit and veggies or M&D? We've got two local, independent toy-stores. The M&D were at both stores and the fruit and veggies were at the second one. Sorry that's not much help to you.

These are the fruits and veggies. They are made by International Playthings.

Though I display them on his grocery store he has other ideas :)
But the ones that he loves most are the condiments he is into stacking them and separting them into piles of 3 due to size and stacking from there :)

The french bread one and the fruits have velcro, and I wish I had put mine away till he is older, the velcro has fallen off of several pieces...I fix it but they obviously can not be enjoyed by him in any fashion right now like the condiments can be...

Note he is 18 months old...

Perfect timing!! Thanks for all the information on the food sets. I had only seen the M&D sets, and had been waiting for others to compare them to before decidng what to buy.

We probaby won't get a wooden kitchen for a few more months at least (unless a great deal comes along!) but I can see the food being fun for Sarah now.

My DS has the Melissa and Doug wooden cutting food set and LOVES it. I'm planning to get him the pizza set for Christmas.

Check out www.gummylump.com -these sets are on sale. Another good source for wooden food is www.cnygiftworld.com -they have a selection of Haba food that can be purchased individually.
