DS just turned 8 months, started crawling and is enthralled with the fireplace. We have a huge fireplace insert that have lots of fires in the winter. Well, the baby cannot stay away from the fireplace so I am obviously going to need a gate. The only one I saw was from Kidco and it was $162. Which seemed like a lot. Does anyone else know of any solutions for this?

Amy, we have three Kidco hearth gates and we are happy with them. I know of one other option. One step ahead, Babies R Us, and I believe the Right Start has foam attachments that are specifically made to cover and cushion hearths. I don't know how they affix, so if you're little one likes to take things apart, it might be more agravation than it's worth to use them. Here is an example:

Thank you! 8 kids wow!

I do have the foam edges- he loves to rip them off and it wont help when the fireplace goes on- which is my primary worry- keeping him away from the fire during winter.

Guess I am stuck buying the kidco gates!

Thanks!

We used the Superyard Play Gate in an "open" position. By adjusting the six sides in just the right way, and holding it in position between built in bookcases on either side of the fireplace and sofas, we were able to block out the area just surrounding the fireplace.

We got the Kidco configure gate which is similar to the hearth gate. Got it locally off craigslist.com for a great price. Dh added wooden pieces on both sides where the gate touches the wall, to extend it and avoid buying another extension. It works great.

Does it matter that the hearth gate is made to withstand the heat?

We don't have a hearth for our fireplace so I don't know if this will work for you. But DH went to homedepot and got some plexiglass cut to fit the fireplace opening....using very strong magnets he attached it to the fireplace. Does this make sense???? Of course, you have to remove the plexiglass if you want to get a fire going so this is what we will do after DS goes to sleep at nite and we want to light a fire. Although, we are in Tx and we don't use our fireplace that much. hth
