I found this kitchen on clearance at TJ Maxx a few years ago for $30 after Christmas. I notice they tend to stock this item around Christmas each year, but I don't remember what they charge full price. It's a great little kitchen, fits perfect at the end of my island.

Amy,

I suspect everyone has their own opinion on the wood vs. plastic debate, but here are some of the reasons I chose wood.

1) Aesthetics - Kitchens are so large and take up so much room, in my mind it is kind of like buying a piece of furniture for your child's room (or wherever). I would like it to look nice since it will be such a focal point.

2) Lack of stickers and noises - Eva has lots of plastic toys (Leap Start Table, Little People Sets, etc) but I think it is good to have a balance between wood and plastic toys. The Step 2 kitchen is the only plastic kitchen I have looked out closely and it seems like over time the stickers would peel off and become unsightly. Also, I think that a kitchen especially is a great opportunity to spark the imagination and all the noises seem to take some of the creativity out of the play, IMO, at least.

3) Longevity - Wooden kitchens are less trendy looking (there are exceptions of course) and better made (also are exceptions) and seem to be an item I could keep for 10 years easily and still be a fun toy to play with. We are planning on an approximate 5 year spread between kids so I see this purchase as a long term investment.

Anyway, these are just my thoughts and I in no way mean to imply that a plastic kitchen is somehow substandard in anyway. This is just the thoughts that went into my decision making process.

I have to say, I love the way this kitchen looks! I was really drawn to the Land of Nod kitchen, but there is no way I can justify the almost $500 price tag, especially when I like the Small World Toys kitchen almost as much and it is less than $300. But this kitchen is almost as cute as the Land of Nod kitchen and it only costs $150! I did notice that assembly is required. The less expensive wooden kitchens seem to state this whereas the more expensive ones do not. That is really not a big deal though. I would worry more about the sturdiness of the kitchen. Does anyone have this or have you seen it IRL?

Did the kitchen come constructed, or was assembly required? If you had to assemble it, how long did it take?

Thanks in advance,

Great research, Veronica!

At what age do you all think a child would start to enjoy something like this? And how long does the interest last--years?

A little friend of ours just got this set for her birthday. It took her Dad 2-3 hours to put together, I am not sure if he is a handy guy to begin with. The set seems quite sturdy. My only "complaint" is that the oven door opens like a cabinet instead of downward.

vpalmer
10-20-2004, 09:29 PM
Thanks Jessica for your insight. I'm glad to hear that the set is sturdy. It is so hard to tell without seeing a set IRL. You know, I don't have any real world experience, but I read on the boards a while back that an oven that opens like a cabinet is actually a good thing because lots of toddlers like to use the oven doors as a ladder. Anyone have any insight into this?

We have the pastel KidKraft kitchen. We got it about two weeks ago for our 19 month old DD. The assembly did take about 2 hours, but it was not anything too difficult. She LOVES her kitchen!!! I love the way it looks. It's girly, but that's OK with me. If we have a boy, I fully intend that he will play with it too. DD is short for her age, but she is easily able to play with everything in the kitchen, minus the microwave and freezer. With a step stool, she can reach those parts. We have lots of play food (wooden and plastic), and she has a ball with all of it. We got the kitchen from Creative Brains for the $159.00 price (free shipping). We let her try it out at a couple of local toy stores, then purchased with the better price from Creative Brains. I can't say enough good things about this kitchen!! :-) I like the primary one, also, but we did not want to wait that long to get one, and it is exclusive to Learning Express stores.

ETA: This kitchen is extremely sturdy, and does not appear tippy to me at all. Though we've just had it two weeks, it seems very durable, and of the quality that can be handed down or saved for future grandkids (a LONG time from now, of course!).

I'm considering getting DD the LT Discover Sounds kitchen, but someone in the Discover sounds thread suggested that it had a short lifespan (9-14 months I think). However, I thought I rad that the wooden kitchens are 3yrs and up. When do you initially purchase these wooden kitchens and what did you have prior to that time?

Hi, the Discover Sounds kitchen is not really a "kitchen" in the same sense a wooden kitchen is a kitchen. Both are great toys, but I don't consider them to be mutually exclusive. We bought Eva the Discover Sounds kitchen on her first birthday. At 16.5 months she still plays with it very often. It is very small and is more of a shape sorter, "busy box" type toy if that makes any sense. At $30 it is a great toy even if the lifespan is relatively short, although I see my daughter playing with it even after we buy a wooden kitchen.

Now, to your question about the age range for a wooden kitchen, most wooden kitchens do have an age range of 3 and up. I found a site that carried the Kid Kraft Kitchen and they said they kept the kitchen in their toy store and kids from 2-8 flocked to it and loved to play with it. Eva will be 18 months when we get the kitchen. Most moms I have talked to have said the imaginative play really takes off at 18 months which is why I wanted to get a kitchen this Christmas instead of waiting an entire year. Wooden kitchens and imaginary food and accessories are a great way to spark the imagination, which is probably the biggest difference between a wooden kitchen and the Discover Sounds kitchen.

I hope this helps a little,

I wanted to mention that PBK now has an adorable dishwasher to match the Metro Kitchen. There are 2 interior pull out racks, one with posts to hold dishes. The dials turn and click. There also is a dirty/clean indicator that spins.

What an amazing thread. Thanks for organizing it all in one place. I just wanted to add that my 2.5 yr old plays with a small basic (no sounds) Step 2 kitchen. My 6 yr niece plays with it whenever she comes over. I think this will be played with for years, a worthy investment. I agree with your logic with the wood vs plastic. My only concern is the lack of work surface on the majority of these units. There needs to be a "cutting" area etc. At 2.5 my daughter has already realized there is no place to put the cup while she "pours".

In love with these choices if money was no object

We bought the Constructive Playthings kitchen. Here is the review (with pictures) I posted right after we bought it: http://www.windsorpeak.com/dc/dcboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=12&topic_id=27772&mesg_id=27772&listing_type=search
It has been two months and Eva still loves her kitchen and plays with it daily. The only complaint we have so far is that the magnet on the 'oven' door is pretty strong and we have to help Eva opening that one door. She can open and close all the other doors just fine though, it is just that one we have a problem with. We thought about just covering that one magnet with tape or something to lessen the power of that magnet.

We decided to buy this kitchen because it was the best price for what you get.

I ended up getting the Little Colorado Kitchen/Fridge set from

http://www.lilikat.com/store/WsDefault.asp?One=109

They have other kitchens on sale too.

It looks like the Land of Nod set except w/o the curtain and painted knobs. It is sooo...cute. I just love the looks of this set. My daughter loves it. She loves opening the fridge and throwing her wooden toy food inside it. She also likes to "cook" us meals.

I have been researching wooden kitchens like mad trying to make sure I see every model on the market before I make a decision. I have even started a super anal spreadsheet! I thought the information I have found so far could be useful to others as well; and it could be helpful to all of us if we add to this list.

Please add any new kitchens I missed.(I will add each kitchen as a different post to this thread.) If you own (or know about) a wooden kitchen please respond to the post with that particular kitchen listed and let us all know what you think including where to get a better price than listed :-) Hopefully, when we are finished, we will have a great resource for play kitchens.

DD got the Little Colorado kitchen set for Christmas 2005, when she was 2. She loves it and plays with it nearly every day. The sink is a little stainless bowl, and the knobs turn. It's very sturdy and I imagine her using it for many years to come. There's lots of room for food and accessories in the fridge, freezer and under the sink. We got the unfinished wood set (both pieces) for $240 shipped, from Ruby Mountain Toys yahoo site, which I can't find right now. I'll edit the post when I find it. This place has good deals on the painted and lacquered sets (for example, both pieces shipped with a little window in the stove for $308).

http://store.platinumgalleria.com/little-colorado-kids-furniture-kids-kitchen-natural.html

She received the Jr Chef stainless steel pots and pans with it, PBK pastel melamine dish set, and a ton of Melissa and Doug wooden food. It's been a big hit with her, and I love to play with it too :).

I can't vouch for the website or the quality of the kitchen, but I came across this and am now intrigued...

http://store.platinumgalleria.com/dexton-retro-kids-kitchen-stove-oven.html

They also have the fridge. I compared it with PBK ones and they are not the same, but they sure look similar and it is 1/2 the price. Anyone see this one IRL?

holliam

ooo... good find! If that had come in red, I might have chosen it over PBK for that price. It says it's MDF, and I know the PBK one is wood, which is probably how they get the cost down. It looks like availability is August so maybe it's new!

ETA: I found it somewhere else too, and this is really a great deal for all the pieces. It doesn't look like they have a sink:

HEre's another one - as if we didn't have enough choices :)

http://tinyurl.com/mndut

What I really like about this kitchen is that there is some counter space. Ever since I read another's mom's comment on these boards about lack of prep space in wooden kitchens, I have been thinking about it. It makes sense to me that you would need some space to cut veggies, roll dough etc.
Anyway, just my 2c.

Actually, the retro and metro PBK sets are made of MDF with plastic and metal detailing. Most of PBK furniture is "select wood and MDF" as well. We used to have the pink and white PBK kitchen and while I don't know for sure I am pretty certain it was MDF as well. Woodworkers are even working with MDF these days so it can be hard to tell the difference but MDF is pretty much everywhere. Toby's bedroom furniture is MDF too and it has a very similar feel to it as the Metro kitchen he has. With PBK we parents are basically only paying for the styling and the name, not solid wood LOL.

I really wanted this one. It is still "for sale" on one website (fantasytoyland, $130), but I called today and sadly it has been discontinued and cannot be bought. Drat!

Thought I'd save y'all some time from searching for it. If anyone's seen something similar under $200, I'd love to see!

Lakeshore Learning has a similar look: http://www.lakeshorelearning.com/IWCatProductPage.process?Merchant_Id=1&Catalog_Id=1&Product_Id=5193&RememberCatalogId=1&Status_Code=ACTV&uniq=2006yr%3A7mth%3A22day%3A3hr%3A30min%3A37s%3A9 85ms%3A+

It was my hunch (based on knowing that PBK also uses MDF is some of the furniture items) and I was curious so I confirmed it with the store and the phone people. I specifically confirmed it for the Retro and Metro models, I forgot to ask about the pink and white set but can't imagine that it is any different. I was fooled by MDF recently at a handmade furniture gallery /studio so the stuff is everywhere and does an excellent job of mimicking wood. Some of the unfinsished pieces of Toby's bedroom set (inside of drawers, bed slat) look like wood and feel like wood but the entire set is MDF. mdf looks and feels so much better than fiberboard did 5, 10, 20 years ago, that is for sure! I just tell myself that is better for forest conservation than hardwood ;).

Edited to clarify that, yes, I am certain the PBK Metro and Retro kitchens are MDF.

holliam
07-22-2006, 08:07 PM
Yea, I have some other PB furniture that is MDF too. Okay, I looked more closely, and I agree. As DH put it, there are different degrees of MDF. But, yea, I paid for the PBK stylin'! ;) So, my hunch is that the same company made the PBK ones or PBK stole their design (which they are known to do to small companies), or the company stole their design. If that set was in red, I would have gotten it!

Holli

I bought Toby a blue furniture set (that is a total rip off of PBK styling) and thought that the steep difference in price was explained by PBK using wood. Not an issue since I loved the price of the cheaper set. Then I realized that while the PBK stuff is studier, it was also MDF. Which made me feel even better about not spending the extra money, LOL. Here is the set he has and most people that see it think it is wood, so long as the armoire is closed:

http://www.windsorpeak.com/dc/user_files/34835.jpg

I also have some MDF dining chairs that are virtually the same feel as the wooden ones and table in the same style that I have.

I meant to post on this thread last year but forgot. We made our DD a play kitchen for Christmas and used this idea but modified it a bit. We made one of the shelves pull out (to be an oven shelf more or less) We also added onto the left side, and did chalkboard paint on one side and magent paint on the other. It was a rewarding project to attempt and we were so proud of yourselves for finishing it. A year later it's her favorite toy!

Jada2929

The tiles are actual leftover tiles from our kitchen backsplash. The little characters on them are from Micheal's Craft Store. They came painted already, so we just attached them to the tiles.

The over burners are just circles that my DH cut out. I painted the black swirls on them. The knobs are just tiny circles that we painted black. Somehow my DH put a long screw through them so DD can turn them. I can take a close up picture if either of you want to see them better.

Hi! I saw this thread resurrected, and scanned through to see if the Target blue wooden kitchen was mentioned- I know I read about it here when we were deciding what to buy, but I don't see it in here now. . . I might just have missed it. . .

http://www.target.com/gp/detail.html?asin=B000CCXF7G
http://ec1.images-amazon.com/images/I/51VQCKTPG2L._SS260_.jpg

But anyway so far we love it! Littleman got it for Christmas last year, and the boys have both really enjoyed it. It has also been a hit with kids who come to visit. We have plastic dishes, cutlery and wooden food that we bought separately.

I have no complaints on the quality- it still looks really great after 7 months so far. (the wooden food is showing much more wear). The kitchen comes with some pots and pans, and I do think they are a bit small. We ended up buying some bigger ones separately. The kitchen is a good size for my boys, and is small enough that we were able to find room for it. And it was inexpensive!

Over all I am very pleased.

My Target kitchen (the old blue one above) unfortunately, is not holding up well at all. We will be replacing it at Christmas and it is only a year old! The back cardboard panel has pulled back and screws have fallen out, TWICE! It has also started to rock a bit even though my husband has re-tightened screws. The Target blue walk-around kitchen is adorable - and cheap - but has gotten bad reviews from consumers, even on Target's own website. I think in addition to flimsy quality issues, there have been concerns about chemicals used and paint chipping off.

For my price-range (inexpensive!) the Alex kitchen (http://www.gummylump.com/front/f_product.php?id=1931) and the EuroKids kitchens (http://www.sensationalbeginnings.com/itemdy00.asp?T1=G+4+135X) posted earlier look great, but for the moms who have them - any issues with paint chipping or safety/durability concerns? I'd love to hear how these kitchens have worked for you.

Chemical safety is becoming a top issue with any toy purchases for me - having been burnt by toy recalls in the past, and with very little faith in the quality control of many of the toys currently on the market. :-(

I also saw this Chicco kitchen on the FAO Schwartz site that looks nice, although not wooden: http://www.fao.com/catalog/product.jsp?productId=1415

This is a FABULOUS thread - thank you!!!
