View Full Version : Anyone have PBK toy storage cubbies or something similar?

I'm looking at these PBK cubbies, as a place to store the larger LP toys. http://ww1.potterybarnkids.com/sch/kwd.cfm?words=toy%20storage&src=hme Does anyone have these or something similar (and preferably cheaper?) I'm looking at the Cameron wall system or the bulk bins, and we probably need to do 3x3. Or maybe I could get away with the Cameron bookshelf and just use storage bins for the people...

Thanks for any insight!

We use the Pottery Barn Kid baskets with gingham liners but store them on a Bonavita bookshelf. We use them mainly for smaller toy items. The little people and smaller pieces would fit nicely in them. We love having everything in baskets. Eva regularly grabs a basket and empties its contents which keeps her busy for a long time. Eva always feels the need to empty whatever she is playing with so in this regard I am thankful to have a few toys in several baskets rather than everything in one large toy box.

We have something like the PBK bulk bins, but ours is actually on old chicken coop that was refinished and backed with beadboard. It's two rows of three cubbies, and is GREAT for storage. We got ours at an antique store, which I know doesn't help you much. But, I did want to say that it works great for toy storage. I'll attach a picture so you can see what I'm talking about. Ours currently has a hodge podge of things in it, but I'm about to fill it with Little People.

We have these from Target:

They work great! Definitely a cheaper option and they have a pastel version for a girls room...

Hey, that's really cool! I bet I could get DH to construct something like that. The bins would need to be taller and deeper to accommodate all of the LP structures, but I think he could do that. Thanks.

We actually do have the pastel one in the basement playroom. I don't really like it though, as I find that Julia is more interested in dumping out the bins than playing with the contents.

It's also not large enough to accommodate the barn, house, castle, etc. The bins are great for holding the LP themselves, but I need something larger to hold the structures.

I am really thinking about going for the Cameron bookshelf and only using baskets on the bottom shelf for the actual people. There should be enough clearance on the top 2 shelves for the structures.

Yes, we really love ours. I don't think it would be too hard to make. Baskets don't fit in our cubbies, but I've thought about getting some Rubbermaid or other such small plastic baskets to try. The LP ark does fit, FWIW.

We have the PBK Cameron system and love it. We have baskets with gingham liners along the bottom and they work great. It is really attractive and helps give the playroom a clean, finished look. I love that we can add on pieces in the future. Currently we have only two bases and two cubbies since DS is a climber but we plan to add more in the future. LMK if you'd like to see a photo!

Hi Lisa,
I would love to see some pics if you don't mind!! I too am considering purchasing these cubbies. Also, are they hard to put together?

Thanks,
Renee

We just bought some of the Cameron system pieces but haven't put them together yet. We got 3 bases, 4 cubbies, and the art cabinet and art cubby (making 3 units altogether). I'm really excited about using them so I'm glad to hear a good report!

Here are a couple of photos. The base units are deeper than the cubbies which gives a nice little "shelf" that my DS likes to use to place his toys on and then play with them. It also makes for a nifty perch for him climb on to reach his stuffed animals on the top of the unit. The system is really sturdy, though, and I don't worry at all that it will tip (at least since it is only one cubby high.) If we built it any taller with additional pieces, I would anchor it to the wall.

Denise - I love the art storage cubbies. Those are next on my list!

They weren't too difficult to assemble but did take some time. One of our units was damaged and we had to return to the store for a replacement. I would definitely recommend checking all of the pieces before starting to assemble them. HTH!

I'm definitely going to purchase these now! Your's looks great! It helps so much to actually see toys on the shelves. It holds a lot more than I thought. Thanks for the pictures! :)

I have the cameron shelves with baskets, and they are great. I'm not sure they'd be big enough for little people buildings though-I don't have any, so can't say for sure but the baskets were a bit smaller than I realized when they arrived. Perfect for lots of things, just not sure about structures. I would measure first just to make sure!

We have similar taste, I LOVE my eeboo alphabet cards! I have them over the crib in my unisex 'nature' theme nursery. With wanting 3 kids and with a whole house to decorate I knew I only had finances and time for one nursery. Those cards are perfect. I saved the set and keep meaning to put a few up in the play room. Your room looks great!

That looks great. I've been eyeing those for a long time, but haven't paid close attention to sales. I wonder if they ever get marked down. The prices on the website aren't bad though. While on the website I came across this desk, but I want it for me, not the kids!

There is a seller on Ebay that makes knock-off PBK furniture and they have started making the storage system as well. I keep checking them out, they have excellent feedback, but have not yet taken the plunge to actually buying from them so I can't vouch for the items IRL. The seller ID is JUSTGOODSTUFF (I'm pretty sure that's it).

Angela,

I love the alphabet cards, too! I get compliments on them all the time. DS loves walking around the room naming the animals. :-)

Most baby boutiques carry them so you might want to call around before you pay shipping.

I don't know if you need a system this big, but here is what I have in my playroom. I LOVE it (it is actually two units next to each other). It fits most of the LP sets except for the castle and the amusement park.

Marie,

Where did you find those cubby units? I think they would be great in DD's room. Are the bins on the shelves made of canvas? Where did you find those?

I really love your playroom setup! TIA for any information you can give me!

Ikea makes a similar one too. I don't know the size of the cubies but I want to get one for our playroom when the open a store near me next spring (I can't wait for that!).

Sorry!! I meant to post where I got this. It is from Ikea. It is called the Expedit system and is extremely affordable! Granted, it is not wood, but I think it really works well for the playroom. We really wanted to do built-ins, but decided not to spend the money right now. So, we decided to go with this and do the built-ins later. We figured that even if they didn't hold up well, we didn't spend that much money and we could always use them in the basement later.

Well, they are just particle-board with a laminate finish, but I think they look really nice and they are really sturdy. I was also worried about the laminate chipping, but we've had them for over 6 months now and we haven't had any problems. So, they might not last forever, but so far they are holding up great!

So, I'm really happy with them. They come in two sizes. Mine are the larger ones. Just for a reference point, my ceilings are 9' tall. If you notice, we have longer cubbies on the ends. We simply took out the "walls" between two cubbies to create that. Otherwise, you could have all uniform cubbies.

Toni, the bins are canvas and they are great!! I was thrilled how perfectly they fit in the cubbies. I bought them at HomeGoods. It is a store owned by the same corporation that owns TJMaxx and Marshall's. So, if you don't have a HomeGoods around you, you might be able to find them at one of those other stores in their Home Furnishings section.

Let me know if you have any other questions!

Now this looks very good, and the price is right. Unfortunately it looks like you can't order the darker finishes online, only the white. But I think we could still work with that. Thanks to you and the pp who showed this system in her home. I love the idea of removing the vertical piece on the end to have a wider shelf.

Marie,

Thanks for the information about the cubbies. We are getting an Ikea this summer and I can't wait! I went to the one in Virginia at Potomac Mills and I didn't want to leave! LOL!

We do have a Home Goods in my area, but it's not close to me at all. There are several TJMaxx's and Marshall's near me. I really like the TJMaxx and More store, because they do have a greater variety than the regular TJMaxx. I will definitely look for the canvas bins. DS has been diagnosed with bad allergies and wicker baskets were not recommended according to several websites I have visited.

I saw on another thread that you got your grocery store from the PBK outlet. I have been wanting to go to the one closest to us for quite awhile. Hmmm, maybe I could convince DH that we need quality time as a family and that shopping at the outlets would be a perfect way to do it! I wonder if he'll go for it! :)

Thanks again!

Toni,

You're welcome! Let me know if you have any other questions!

Lucky you-- getting an Ikea! The closest one to me is 3 hours away, but the trip was so worth it to get that system.

The TJMaxx and More stores have a lot of the same things that HomeGoods has (I have both so I can attest to that). In fact, I sometimes see HomeGoods price tags on the things I find in the TJMaxx and More home furnishings department. So, you might be able to find the canvas bins there. I'm really happy with them!

Definitely convince DH that a trip to the outlet mall is a family activity :) . I was surprised at how much they had when I went there last week. In the past, it was very hit or miss, but this time there was sooooo much great stuff. I definitely could have bought more!!
