My 8 month old has just started crawling up the stairs. I am wondering if anyone has a baby gate that they really like that attaches to the bannister, not a wall.

Try a search in the baby proofing forum. Someone posted a summary of the most recent Consumer Reports review of the best gates. I don't remember the name of the one we wound up purchasing.

Hi,

We have the first years simple & secure gate, and we love it. It is a terrific gate, very highly rated by CR. The only thing, we had to rig up something in order to install it with our bannisters. I think, though, that that would pretty much be the case no matter what gate you order!

Good luck!

I just saw the simple & secure gate on clearance at walmart.

http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.gsp?product_id=2629949&cat=134287&type=1&dept=5427&path=0%3A5427%3A134286%3A134287

Not sure how good a price that is.

For mounting our gate we got a piece of 2x4 and mounted the hardware to the 2x4 and then used zip ties to secure the 2x4 to the bannister. This allowed us not to damage the bannister. Our bannister posts are square at the bottom so this worked well.

We have one from Ikea that we are very happy with. You can adjust it to swing only outward or only inward. It was inexpensive...30 or less I believe. NAK or I would look up the info at ikea's site for you. THere were posts about it in the past on here. I believe it is similar to another pricier gate...maybe the kidco?
