Hi,

We are looking for input on how one attaches and protects a portable DVD player from our 2 year old DS, for our upcoming trip home to Australia. We are concerned both that he may fiddle with buttons and/or drop it.

Any advice?

Last time we flew, we just put the laptop on our tray (not DS's tray) so that he could see but not touch the computer. Note that the sound wasn't loud enough for him to hear (he didn't care) and even if it was, we would have had to turn it down so as not to bother other passengers, so you might want to introduce your DS to headphones for the trip.

We got this one from Caselogic. I've seen them at Wal-Mart and Target for about $25.99. DD was still rear-facing and the rear passenger didn't mind since it was keeping her quiet and it wasn't in hte way of her tray.

There's a Target promo going on right now and they have a similar one by Mintek.

I bought one last year for a trip and honestly, it was a big waste of $200. My now-2-year-old constantly wants to touch the buttons (and has ever since I got it, when he was about 16 months old) or touch the machine. Even though I've only used the machine a handful of times, the battery no longer holds a charge and can only be used when plugged into a power outlet. (I can't remember if the big beasts of trans-Pacific airline travel have the cigarette-lighter type power adaptor plugs or not.) Honestly, it is far more effective to put a DVD in my husband's laptop and play it that way. The screen gives him a bigger picture and he already knows not to push the buttons on the laptop, so that's less of an issue. He won't wear earphones and the airlines will not allow you to turn the sound up to a hearing level anyway, so he usually watches it w/o sound and is just as happy.

Andrew got one for christmas, but he have not used it on the plane yet. I got him some sony fold up headphones from Target and he love his headphone. I have them on the smalled setting and they fit him fine.
