DD is just getting into trains. She plays with a wooden set that her sitter has, and we have a few Thomas & Friends trains at home. I'm not sure what to do about track, though. Would I be better off buying a pre-packaged set with an oval track or something like that, or is it good to buy separate pieces of track that can be formed into various shapes? Any suggestions for wooden track for a beginner? We will probably get her the Costco train table at some point, if her train interest continues. So, I'd prefer not to invest a huge sum in track right now. Thanks in advance!

The Thomas figure 8 set is popular for new Thomas fans, and it is pretty reasonably priced - you can find it for about $32 online, about the same price as buying similar generic track separately.

Thanks for the suggestion, Lori! Any tips on good websites from which to order the track (and other trains and accessories)?

If you do a search, you'll find a few threads with great sites. I usually order from www.creativetrains.com.

nak...
if you live near an ikea they have a starter set of track and a small wooden train (4 cars?) for 12 or 15 dollars. I believe it is available in-store only.
