I'm wondering if anyone has had any luck with finding a gate for a wider doorway. I'm looking for a sturdy gate that can be opened easily with one hand, and that is easy to close. The doorway is a high traffic area between my kitchen and living room. One issue that is important is that it doesn't have a bar that you have to step over. I'm such a clutz I'm sure that I would be stubbing my toes or tripping.
I have found a gate online that looked good, but it was $100. I was hoping to get out without spending that much.
Any opinions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Your situations is tough because of your wide opening. My first thought was the Hands Free gate which is wonderful but it does not go wide enough for you. Most of the step through gates only go up to 42".

I did find this gate online. It's a lot of cheaper but I've never purchased this brand before so I don't know the quality.

There is also Kidco. I can vouch that Kidco is a wonderful brand but it is expensive since you would need to buy the extension. Usually the cheapest place for Kidco is through http://www.babycatalog.com/ unless you have a coupon code for another site.

We have a 47.5 inch wide hallway and used the Kidco Center Gateway with two extensions. I bought them through Baby Age, which has flat rate shipping.

Extensions: http://www.babyage.com/product_details.aspx?productid=952

Good luck!

Thank you both so much for looking into this for me. They both look like they may be good options for me.
Thanks again,

Just to let anyone else know who was looking for a wide gate, I found one that goes up to 54" wide. While I was debating which gate to go with (from the online stores), I happened to be in Target and found a Parents Magazine gate. It is called the Extra Tall top-of-stairs gate with alarm. It was $59, then I was at the Toys R'us and found the same gate. It must be new, because I have looked all over and never seen them before.
I already have it installed and it works great!
