My mother is already thinking of buying DD a doll for her first b-day in July. Any recommendations? Originally she was thinking Bitty Baby, but I wonder if it will be too big? Also, is she totally plastic? I have thought of a Waldorf doll, but I think my mom wants something "traditional" I.e. something like I had when I was young. What about Madame Alexander Huggums? I know they make 2 versions, 1 with plastic arms/legs and one with cloth.

Would love to hear opinions and see any pictures.

TIA!

My DD has two dolls that she got for her 2nd birthday but I think would be good for a 1st birthday. One is a Lee Middleton Newborn Wonder (http://www.leemiddleton.com/ourbabies/product_detail.php/pid=67~sid=17/index.html). I think it's light enough for a 1 year old to carry around easily, and she's pretty cuddly. Then there's the Corolle Tidoo dolls. http://www.corolledolls.com/online_catalog/product_cat.php/subid=115/index.html The website says they're for 18 mos+, but they're fine for younger ones, I think. I like that they can go in the tub and the washing machine. DD also has a Babicorolle (http://www.corolledolls.com/online_catalog/product_cat.php/subid=93/index.html), which is nice and light, but I like the others that I listed better.

I just realized I made it pretty obvious that I think a light doll is important for little ones. I guess that's because DD has received some heavier dolls as gifts, and I've hated to see her struggling to carry them. HTH!

My Mom got DD a Bitty Baby when she was 18 mos. old, and she absolutely loves it. She calls it baby and carries it around with her. I think the head, arms and legs are plastic and the trunk is fabric. DD also has a couple of fabric dolls that she likes, but she definitely prefers the Bitty Baby.

I also have a Madame Alexander Huggums that I plan to give DD either for her 2nd birthday or when her little sister is born, and it is very pretty. It also has a plastic head, plastic arms and legs and a fabric trunk. It is smaller than the Bitty Baby, though, so that might be better for a younger child. I got a good deal at smartbargains.com.

There were a lot of posts about dolls around the holidays. You might want to check those out.

DD has a Huggums that she was given when she was born. It's a good size and weight for a one-year old to carry around and play with. Ours has the cloth body and limbs, and a vinyl head. I really love this doll! I had one myself when I was little, and we still have her. Huggums' legs bend easily, so she can sit for playing. Ours came in a Pat the Bunny outfit.

DD's other favorite doll is a Corolle Calin. It's about the same size as Huggums (12", I think), but her body is kind of a bean bag. That sounds odd, I know, but it makes the doll kind of malleable and easy for a toddler to carry and hug, squish into a stroller, etc. Her legs from the knee down, and arms from the elbows down, are soft vinyl. Her head is soft vinyl.

Something I like about both of these is that their eyes open and close. DD likes to put them to bed and have them sleep. Also, it is essential for my DD that she be able to "sit" the doll down on a chair, in a stroller, in her doll high chair, etc.

Several of DD's friends have Bitty Baby, and I think she is kind of hard to pose. I'm not sure that she can sit. IMO, Huggums and the Corolle doll I mentioned are easier for a toddler to handle and play with.

Here's a link to Calin on the Corolle website, and a picture.

HTH! I don't think you can go wrong with either of these dolls!

I second the recommendation for Calin! We got her for Sarah when she was about 19 months, but she easliy could have played with her sooner. The beanbag core makes her nice to snuggle with, and Calin sits up well (important for tea parties! :)), and fits easily into a doll stroller or wherever else your little one on might want to stow her!

My DD has several dolls: a Madame Alexander, a Cabbage Patch Kid, a Bitty Baby, a TRU brand doll that came with a stoller/crib/etc., and some soft dolls. She likes them all but is getting to the point where she wants them to sit on their own, which most of them do not do, so I think that would be a key feature I would look for (I have not bought any of these dolls for her -- they have all been gifts). But mostly I find she is not particular about how the dolls look or anything (she's almost 19 months), and she's kind of rough on them (carries them by their hair), so basically I wouldn't spend too much on a doll at this age.

My DD received the Bitty Baby for her 1 year birthday. She is 18 months now and is really starting to love it. I don't have experience with the others, though--sorry!

The Corolle Tidoo dolls are the right size and weight for a 1 year old. And since they are waterproof they are easy to clean up.

Huggums are nice too, but they are a little heavier, in particular their head is heavier. The Corolle dolls are easier for a 1 year old to handle. (we have both)

DD received the Calin Laughing Bright for her birthday. They have a bunch of different versions of this doll. Sophia loooooves her "Baby". It has a soft body, is washable, and has plastic head, hands and feet. Her eyes blink.

Funny story: Last night I mentioned that Baby had a smudge on her face and we should probably give her a bath. Soon thereafter I hear Sophia lifting the toilet lid (which she never does). She had decided to give baby a bath in the toilet!!! Yuck!!!

So Baby got her first real bath last night.

Karen, thanks for mentioning that about Huggums (that they're heavier). I've been planning to get DD a Calin or Tidoo for her birthday or Christmas, but just recently saw the Huggums dolls and OMG are they beautiful. If the Huggums are difficult for a small toddler to carry (DD is on the small side) than perhaps we'll wait and I won't have to make a snap (haha 4 months at least) decision about the Madame Alexander.
