View Full Version : High Chair - why the ruffles?!

So we're starting to search for a highchair, most likely we'll end up with the Fisher Price one because of all the great reviews here. But I am so frustrated with the ruffles on all the new ones. It seems like they would be an attractant for more mess (goo in between folds - yuck!), and I just think they look kind of frumpy. The only one BRU had w/o ruffles was white...and I'm too worried it will get icky too fast.

Anyone have any suggestions of chairs sans ruffles? :) - Malia

We felt the same way when looking for high chairs. We hated all of the ruffles so much we bought the Eddie Bauer high chair (purely fo rlooks) and turned around and sold it on Ebay since it wasn't practical for us.

Then we found the Baby Trend High Chair in the Breckenridge print. (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B00005BW1V/ref=pd_sxp_f/002-1780147-5473620?v=glance&s=baby) The displayed fabric has a ruffle - but you can reverse the high chair pad to the other side which is a differnt blue plaid and that side DOES NOT have a ruffle. So that is what we bought and we love it. It has a height adjustment, the seat tilts back, has wheels and a snap off tray cover. It has worked so well for us. It was $98 at BRU - but if you have one of their coupons you can get $10 off.

Perhaps we're just lucky. We do have the navy one with ruffles and haven't had any difficulty with food in the ruffle at all. We've been doing solids for about 6 months now and I'm getting ready to throw the cover in the washer for only the second time. I've washed the straps quite a bit more often and I do wipe the vinyl part of the cover down after every meal. All in all, I'd still choose the ruffles over anything white. I'm shaking my head over the mess on the straps from our lasagna dinner tonight.

I think we've been pretty lucky as well. I've had the same high chair for 10 months, and I've only thrown the cover into the wash once. The rest of the time, I've been able to wipe it off with my homemade disinfectant spray and it's cleaned up just fine. I agree with you that the straps have gotten more stuff on it than the ruffles. It does help that we use a pocket catching bib (does that make sense?) and that has helped keep the straps (and the rest of the chair) more clean.

We have the Eddie Bauer one, and we love it. I just toss the pad in the wash with the rest of the kitchen laundry. It's pretty easy to clean in my opinion.

I'd imagine my straps would fare better if I weren't so lazy and actually did better than 50/50 on getting a bib on her. :-) Luckily, the lasagna was delivered to a baby clothed in diaper only. We practically had to take her outside and hose her down.

Notice, the ruffles are immaculate!

We just returned our unused Fisher Price high chair that had ruffles for one without because of all the negatives we heard about the ruffles. They have a new print now called "jungle plaid" that does not have ruffles. We got that one and so far we love it.

LOL! That's great! Yes, using a bib at every highchair meal does tend to cut out on a lot of the mess, especially if the bib has a crumb catcher. I've been lazy a couple of times when she's just wearing a diaper, and boy, I have to change that diaper right away, especially if it's food I'm afraid is going to set on the diaper. :)

Beware of the Fisher Price highchair that everyone raves about(we bought it as a result of the positive remarks in the book as well). We loved it too until my son figured out that the tray easily detaches from the chair by simply pressing the buttons that are easily reachable underneath the tray. We've had many dinners end up on the floor as a result. We're going out to buy a new chair today because we're tired of the mess.

FP does make one w/o the ruffles. Instead it has..... oh I can't think of the "sewing" term for it.... a "band" of material, a "roll" of material (where has my brain gone?!?!?) around the edge. Anyway, it's navy w/ polka dots and a small butterfly on it. We've been pleased with it! My only gripe is it doesn't have wheels, which I didn't think I'd use so I didn't pay the extra $ for the upgrade.

Thanks Jen, I just did a search and found the one I think you have and it looks like it will be our new chair too! :) It must be really new b/c they don't have it at my BRU yet but I saw a pic of it on Amazon.

I have this highchair - with the dreaded ruffles - and at least for us, they do get really dirty really fast. On the plus side, its easy to take off and washes up like a dream, but i HATE the ruffles. I called fisher price, and you can order one of the pads without a ruffle for what I remember to be a fairly minimal cost. Two I know don't have ruffles are: Funny Butterfly ( a now discontinued chair that was sold at target, navy with colored polka dots) and the Jungle plaid others have mentioned.

hope it helps

I have the FP Healthy Choice chair & took a pair of scissors to that ridiculous ruffle. It's much better now!

We have the Zooper Peas and Carrots... while there are some drawbacks to it, it is sleek w/no ruffles...

We just bought one sans ruffles. It's the Fisher Price Jungle Plaid. http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B00069NW00/102-9026082-4492936?v=glance&s=baby&n=507846&me=A1F83G8C2ARO7P&vi=pictures&img=14#more-pictures

We've only had it since this weekend, but so far so good!

I know the jungle plaid one has at least been out for 6 mo., because that is when I found out I was pregnant and started perusing the baby stuff. That is the one we are registered for and our BRU has had it in stock for at least 3-4 mo. when I definately remember seeing it there and deciding that it was the one for us. Maybe you can ask them if they are going to get them in stock?

Hi - I just read that you have one of these. Can you tell me what you like & dislike about it? I hate the way the FP HC chair looks. The zooper looks much nicer. I have a 4 mo DD and am going to start her on solids in the next 8 weeks, so I'm doing my research now.

Thanks!
Monica

We have this chair- bought it because of the rave reviews here. I do love the chair for alot of reasons but the 2 reasons why I would NOT buy it again are:
The darned ruffles and the detachable tray- which was great until my ds figured out how to flip it off and watch the food go flying!

I do like the height adjustment though. Once he was walking, I just lowered it to number 1 and placed his snacks there. It was an easy way to keep them contained.

I think I will cut the ruffle off like one of the posters mentioned. The cover is a pain to take on and off to wash so maybe that will help.
Good luck!
