Hi-
We've decided it may be time to potty train DD - she tells us when she poops and is fascinated by the potty.

We'd like to start with a potty seat that goes on the potty itself. What's out best choice?

Also, which book should I read on how to do this?

We have the boys version of Lets go Potty. My DS loves it because you can push a button and it makes a flushing sound.

The toddler bargain book recommends the CUSHIE-TUSHIE contour potty seat.

We have a no name brand one from BRU, and we have a Baby Bjorn potty seat. The Bjorn is WAAAAAY nicer and fits better than the other. Once we really get into potty training, if the cheapo one fails, I'll be investing in another BB one. It's worth the extra $, IMO.

Also, we've only looked at a few potty books, but the one DS loves is the Dr. Sears (and his wife coauthored) book You Can Go To The Potty.

We got it from the libaray, but I'm thinking we need to buy it, as he keeps requesting it. Plus, it makes me cringe less than some of the books.

We have the Baby Bjorn potty seat too and my 19 month old loves it--she'll happily hang out on the potty sitting on this seat. She hasn't mastered the potty yet though...

We also have the Bjorn seat and it's very nice. Conner refuses to sit on it though-- he's nowhere near being ready to potty train. He's 22 1/2 months.

We have a Baby Bjorn Potty Chair too but in the last couple months DS prefers to go on the big toilet. We did not buy anything special for it since one of the daycare directors we were interviewing (lady with a masters in special child education) showed us a trick how to have DS use a big toilet without any inserts/covers.

It sounds more difficult than it really is and I did not believe her it would work, not for a 17 months old active toddler, but it took DS only two or three days to master the balance act. We put him on the big toilet with legs spread out a bit and have him grab onto the seat in the front, between the legs. This way he pees IN the toilet, and not all over the place (like sometimes happened with the BB Potty Chair) since he has to lean forward in order to not fall in ;) and by default his 'equipment' points in the toilet. Of course, DS washes hands every time he uses a toilet and we don't let him grab onto public toilets.

Depending on the age your DD decides to potty learn and her personality you might be better off with a toilet seat cover/insert than a chair. I have a friend whose 2 year old DS won't use his chair, only the toilet cover from it, since he wants to be like his parents. He loved sitting on it clothed before they started PTing him so go figure.

I liked the Bjorn Potty Seats. Very easy to clean and moveable. I also use those potty inserts that you buy at Target to use the big potty. I just recently bought a flipnflush which attaches to your toilet. Very easy to clean and use. I just keep a stepstool by the toilet. My DD still reads her book Once Upon a Potty. She loves Prudence!

I wasn't sure if you were looking for kids potty books or adult how-to books? Anyways, I curbed my desire to rush out and buy a potty-training book and it still seems to be going fine. Most toddler care books cover this so I just used the section in Brazelton's Touchpoints as my guide and it's working well.

We have both a stand-along potty seat (a Safety first one, which DS likes because it has it's own lid). I personally recommend these to start with because they are less intimidating for kids and because they can navigate them better on their own. Also they are portable and you can bring it out in the yard for those first bare-bottomed potty training sessions. I doubt it really matters which stand-alone potty seat you get - they all seem more or less the same, function-wise. We recently got a flipnflush (or whatever it's called) that attaches to our toilet and DS now prefers that.

If you have an oval shaped toilet bowl, be careful when purchasing potty seats that go on the toilet. We had to return the Cushies seat which claimed to fit "all standard" toilets because it totally did not fit our toilet. The flipnflush comes in two sizes, one for round and one for oval bowls. The Bjorn fits both I believe but I was hesitant to spend 3x as much since DS doesn't seem all that picky.

HTH!
