I bought the Bright Baby series by Roger Priddy for my DD about that age and she still loves them. I also bought "First Words" for another childs first birthday and he is all over it also. The link is for Borders. The first four books make up the series. (Colors, Animals, First Words, Trucks). DD even got a lot of her first words from the books.

Gertie Ball! It's a great ball for this age. The O-Ball also is good. Other thoughts are books: Karen Katz lift-the-flap (Where Is Baby's Bellybutton?; Toes, Ears & Nose; and Where Is Baby's Mommy? are all good) and Little People Farm lift-the flap; FP Little People School Bus; LT Handle Haulers trucks; peg puzzles.

I just found this great deal on Amazon and sent it to a friend's child....Learning Block books set. It is a box filled with small books that can also be used as blocks. The illustrations are fun and my son LOVES this set. The books are small and he likes carrying them around the house and "reading" them to himself. He also loved stacking them. This is a really good price on Amazon and I think a gift any parent and child would appreciate!
