Playmat on Carpet?

I'm getting started on creating a playroom for DS in the basement, and I'd really like some of those colorful interlocking foam mats to brighten up his room. However, a girlfriend was telling me that it was basically pointless to put a mat over a carpeted area.

What do you think? Should I spend the money on the mats? (I'm still debating ... I think may www.softtiles.com brand?)

What do you have on your playroom floors?

I have a package of those foam mats sitting in storage because when I put them down in front of the fireplace (it has a tile hearth) my then 11 month old daughter promptly figured out how to pull them apart and scatter them around the room.

Sooo...that probably wouldn't be the option I would choose.
