View Full Version : Help me find some puzzles

I cannot seem to find the kind of puzzles I'm looking for, so I'll post here in hopes that someone knows what I'm talking about and can either tell me where to find them, or why I should skip them in lieu of something else.

Jake has mastered, some time ago now, the puzzles where each piece is a single item on a puzzle, like an puzzle that has 1 fish, one octopus, etc.

What I think I want are the kinds of puzzles that I recall seeing in schools and when I used to work with kids. They are puzzles that have one scene, or more specifically an animal or a vehicle, and there were 3-6 pieces of that puzzle. So the kid had to figure out where the right pieces went, but much easier than a jigsaw puzzle. KWIM? Where are these puzzles. All I keep coming up with, aside from one M&D fire truck puzzle (which I'm considering), are the single peg piece puzzles or 20+ piece jigsaw puzzles for preschoolers. Those seem too hard for a frustrated 2 yr old toddler.

Can anyone link me to such puzzles?

I just got one at Tuesday Morning. It was a Chanukah scene, but they also had a Christmas scene.

We have the insect ones from lakeshorelearning.com. DS loves them!

How about something like this? You could keep the left and right hand pieces separate:

[link:www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B00004WHNL/qid=1125010175/br=1-4/ref=br_lf_t_4//002-6664891-3596806?v=glance&s=imaginarium&n=3569291|Hand 1]

This is similar:
[link:store.yahoo.com/kidsurplus/sma2540.html|hand 2]

or these (but not so keen on the whole sound thing myself):

[link:www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B0001YNKWA/qid=1125010493/br=1-19/ref=br_lf_t_19//002-6664891-3596806?v=glance&s=imaginarium&n=3569291|sound 1]

[link:www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B0001YNLJ2/ref=pd_bxgy_img_2_cp/002-6664891-3596806?v=glance&n=3569291&s=imaginarium|sound 2]

I can't tell how many pieces this is or just what exactly it is, but this might be fun:
[link:www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B00001OX5O/qid=1125010269/br=1-18/ref=br_lf_t_18//002-6664891-3596806?v=glance&s=imaginarium&n=3569291|Thomas]

How about this one? You could take a picture of a single object and make a puzzle out of it with these. These actually seem to have the most potential, especially because you could choose pictures of things that Jacob would like. The only thing is that they're 12 pieces, so more than what you're looking for. However, with a simple picture, it might be doable for Jacob.

[link:www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B00005LBIX/qid=1125010600/br=1-17/ref=br_lf_t_17//002-6664891-3596806?v=glance&s=imaginarium&n=3569291|make your own]

Ooh! This one looks pretty cool. It looks like a 2 year old already proficient with peg puzzles would like these (based on the reviews, of course):

[link:www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B00004R8JS/qid=1125010755/br=1-5/ref=br_lf_t_5//002-6664891-3596806?v=glance&s=imaginarium&n=3569291|4 in 1]

Here's a cute 3-piece puzzle of a little boy:

[link:www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B00008XL3J/qid=1125010936/br=1-2/ref=br_lf_t_2//002-6664891-3596806?v=glance&s=toys&n=3569291|Fisher Price]

These could be more complex, but maybe he could do them?

[link:store.yahoo.com/kidsurplus/rav7404.html|vehicle block puzzles]
[link:store.yahoo.com/kidsurplus/rav7403.html|animal block puzzles]

I've seen them with 9 or 12 blocks as well.

Oh, and slightly OT, since you're probably not looking for something like this, but I'd love to get something along these lines for later, when Kaya is older:

[link:www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B0000DI9HZ/qid=1125010269/br=1-12/ref=br_lf_t_12//002-6664891-3596806?v=glance&s=imaginarium&n=3569291|clock 1]

or

[link:store.yahoo.com/kidsurplus/g008.html|clock 2]

I've found some others, but maybe this will help you get started? Have fun! I'm still working on Kaya with the peg puzzles and sometimes she can put them in and sometimes she can find the right place, but can't orient them. I did notice her testing things that were "wrong" yesterday, though. It was very interesting for her to put the right one in, then take it out and try some of the others.

I know - the down side is you have to buy the set of four. But $8/each it's not too bad. You could keep several for yourself and give the others as gifts.

Ah, okay, I misread it--$8 each isn't so bad. And you're right--you could get a set of 4 to give your kiddo 4 different ones or give the rest as gifts. I'll have to bookmark it for future reference. :)

We have this puzzle from Schylling which has around 10 pieces.
http://trains4tots.com/noname2.html

DS has also pretty much mastered peg puzzles, so I picked this one up for him awhile ago, though I think it is a little too difficult for him right now.

Then I saw these puzzles at the Lakeshore Learning Store.
http://www.lakeshorelearning.com/IWCatProductPage.process?Merchant_Id=1&Section_Id=293&pcount=0&Product_Id=69433&RememberSectionId=292&RememberCatalogId=1

I got the emergency vehicles set which only has 5-6 pieces per puzzle. I haven't given it to him yet, but they do look a bit easier than the Schylling one. If you have a Lakeshore Learning store nearby then you wouldn't have to pay shipping. And all wooden puzzles are 20% off in store until 9/10.

I know what you are talking about. Both DH's and my parents have some from our childhood. The closest thing I have see is at TRU. They have some, mostly Little People, I think.

We have several of the Schylling inlaid ones. I looked everywhere for inlaid puzzles after DS decided he liked them at the library. We have the firetruck, school bus and cow.

Also, I am a big fan of the Lauri crepe rubber puzzles. DS was doing the inlaid version of these around age 2. Some are more difficult than others.

Oh, and one other thought (although these are jigsaw puzzles, but totally cool) - the 4 in 1 puzzles in a box by both M&D and Schylling. There are various designs. You can often find them at TJ Maxx/Marshalls.

Thanks all! Who knew that what I was envisioning (remembering) would be so darned hard to find? But thanks to you all, I've found a few of them, and some others that could work. Now I just have to decide how to spend the money and where. Thanks again!

I just saw some of the Schylling puzzle at Marshalls for 3.99 each. They had the cow, fire engine, 3-Little Pigs and perhaps the duck.

Andrea,

You can find the best deals at places like Marshalls, TJ Maxx, Ross, and Tuesday Morning. They all carry the same puzzles by M&D and Schylling.

For anyone interested here are a few sites that carry a good selection of unique puzzles.
