We have two of the playmats that I bought at Ross-the larger Map of Sodor ($14) and the smaller Dockside Adventures ($5). They are nice products, but my son rarely plays with them. The Dockside Adventures is a hard board, and may work better for playing trains, but it is very small. When he's not using his train table, DS plays trains in his "Thomas Amazing Pop-Up Train Book." The trains will fit thorough the house and he likes it alot.
