I prefer wood to plastic (but don't mind some plastic if it's good quality and cute), and non-cheesy to cheesy (however you define that...LOL). I'm hoping to get one for my DS. He likes to bang on drums, so it needs to be sturdy.

Check out the drums at westmusic.com. There is no plastic and they have survived my children dancing on them.

Thanks. These are both great options. We don't have the space for the wood one from Thailand, but it's totally cute.
Jessica, do you remember if you got a kid's drum? Also, was it a tom tom or a bongo, or other drum? I'm not sure if I like the patterns on the kid's floor tom...I go back and forth between thinking they're cute and wanting something more plain. They have a plain colored single bongo drum, but I don't know anything about which would be better, or if they would both be good options. Any thoughts? They're the same price, so that's not an issue.

We use the Remo Drums in Music Together:

http://www.musiciansfriend.com/srs7/g=home/search/d=tp?q=remo+kids&rsrc=00633

I like them because they take a lot of wear and tear in class and they still look great. My friend w/a 2 year old says the drum is the best toy they ever bought their son. He'll be using it for years.

You can also look online at : http://www.musictogether.com for other instruments, drums, maraquitas etc..

Not quite the "typical" drum, but cute none the less...

I'm glad you posted it. That was the drum I've been looking at, but couldn't tell the colors from the other wesbite. I'm going to get it. My DS will love it.
