After months of indecisiveness, I've narrowed it down to two:

Either the OLD style Small World Toys (white fronts)
http://www.mrtoys.com/small-world-toys/
or the lakeshore learning set
http://www.lakeshorelearning.com/IWCatProductPage.process?Merchant_Id=1&Catalog_Id=1&Product_Id=35019&RememberCatalogId=1&Status_Code=ACTV&uniq=2005yr%3A11mth%3A29day%3A5hr%3A12min%3A219ms% 3A+

For DS for Christmas, DH and I will buy 1-2 pieces, my parents will buy one piece and my ILs will buy 1 piece - I'm not a control-freak or anything!

I was curious if there were any differences between the old and new style Small World Toys sets besides the color? I'm planning on putting the set in my den (where we spend 95% of our time) and I like the white fronts better (a little less conspicuous)

And, besides the handles, are there any differences between the Small World Toys and the Lakeshore Learning ones?

Thanks so much - it's almost time to order

We purchased the white front ones last Christmas from Sensational Beginnings. I remember there being different handles available at different sites and I went for the best deal. I did get the fridge with the long handles and even the baby can open it up so I think it's easier than the single knob. The magnets are pretty powerful at first too. I also got the stove & sink combo.

Make sure you put these together when you have a bit of time because it did take us about 30 - 45 minutes per piece.

I think you will like this kitchen,

If you do get the Small World Toys set, there is a pretty good price at Hearthsong. http://tinyurl.com/bejzn

We bought the old style set last year, and love it! (with the long handles) I like the white fronts better also, the new colors are a bit much. We also had several relatives buying different pieces and it all worked out well.

I agree with PP, definitely allow some time to put them together. We bought 4 pieces (fridge, sink, stove, and dishwasher) and it took DH HOURS to put them together. LOL!

But they have held up very well in the last year, DS plays with them every day, and we have other kids over all the time who are playing with them as well. (my 5 year old neighbor was inside the sink cabinet one day, lol) I already think they have been worth the price, and I'm sure they will get lots more use in the coming years.

Hope you are happy with your purchase! We are. :)
