View Full Version : Toy food that can be "cut" and Vacuum that works!

Our Early Intervention team mentioned a couple of things that would be great for DS and I don't know where to look:

a) toy food that they can seemingly "cut", such as oranges that are segmented. I believe they are held together by velcro but I'm not certain.

b) toy vacuum that actually DOES suck up beads or similar objects (under supervision, of course!).

Thanks for any advice you may have! Even if we are unable to obtain them before Christmas, we would love to get these items for DS as soon as possible.

TIA!
Stephanie

We have this and love it! It's very popular amongst the ladies on the boards too!

Here are two cutting food sets:

I know I have seen plastic cutting food sets as well, but I cannot for the life of me remember where.

a- Melissa and Doug makes a set that we have. I am sure it was bought at a Marshalls or TjMaxx knowing who bought it for us. Jude is loving it! I recently found it and opened it for him. He has been making salads (needed a stainless steel bowl from the cupboard) and sandwiches for us.

b- A friend bought a little handheld Dirt Devil for her son. Why but a toy when you can get the real thing was her thought since there would be supervision. I have seen there is a child version of an upright Dirt Devil. I am sure it is weak, but it is out there.

Happy shopping!

a) the m&d cutting food that PP have mentioned

b)TRU carries at least one vacuum that says it really works - I think it was Hoover.

I think this is the one I saw - It had a big sticker in front that said "Really Works" or something.

Thanks to all of you for your speedy replies! I will probably order the food by this weekend and I'll check TRUS for a vacuum...though I would love DS to just use a handheld one to help me to clean up after his meals! :-) That may be something to consider before buying another toy...

My daughter also has the plastic velcro fruit and loves it. I found something similar at www.beyondplay.com It is called "Peel 'N' Play Veggies" item D923 It is under the dramatic play section. Good luck!

Regarding your vacuum question, I bought a Dirt Devil Junior a long time ago on a really good sale but haven't given it to DS 0yet. On the box it says "really picks up", but I haven't been able to test it yet. I did read somewhere that it has a little bin that comes off (like adult bagless vacuums) to empty the stuff out. It's an upright vacuum with a detachable play handheld (although I like the idea of just using a regular handheld too).

Another idea, but more expensive right now, is the Dyson DC07 toy vacuum. (There was a thread on here last week saying that you could buy them directly now from Dyson but quantities were limited.) I just sold one yesterday (I received it through a promotion from Dyson) on ebay for $55, so that is much pricier than other toy vacuums. On that box it said that it also picks up and it has a hose that comes off and suctions things up, along with some attachments. The picture on the box showed paper dots in the collection area, so I'm not sure it would be strong enough to handle beads but I think spreading paper dots on the floor could be fun for your DS too.

HTH! :)

My MIL bought that vacuum for DD for Christmas, but I haven't gotten a chance to try it out yet of course. ;) I picked it over other "toy" vacuum cleaners I'd seen mainly because it doesn't make stupid un-realistic noises and doesn't look like a cartoon character. Now I just have to hope it actually works... :P

Vacuum: We have this one. It "works," but just barely! I honestly couldn't tell it was working until I found the play vacuum cleaner bag and there was a fair amount of dust in there. I don't think it would pick up beads, or much more than dust really. But technically, it works.

If you have an ac moore, they usually have mel and doug sets for $19.99 and then you can use one of their or a competitors coupon for 50% off.

Wait a minute - what coupons could I use at AC Moore? That would be great!

Thanks,

I know for a fact that they take Michael's coupons. I think I also read on the boards that they take Jo Ann Fabrics coupons as well.

I saw several wooden 'cut' food sets at Marshall's the other day. I don't remember the price, but their toy prices are usually very good. Good luck!
