I have an almost three month old. I am going to put her in her crib in the next couple of weeks. When can I start using a lovey? (A small sort of blanket thing)? Are loveys a risk for SIDS?
Thanks,
Elle

I read somewhere that a small stuffed animal was OK, but I'm not sure at what age. I only remember that it said it should be smaller than their head, firm and have no buttons, bows, or ribbons that could come off.

Sorry this isn't much help!

If it is a small silkie like travel size, I would start to put it in the crib during nap time, when you can still check on the baby with it, and make sure it is not across their face, KWIM??? Then maybe six months old, I would put it in at night.
I don't think there is a hard fast rule about age, just when the baby can remove the object from his/her face by himself. My one year old goes to bed with a monkey (about 12" big), a taggie, and a silkie blanket. He seems to be okay with it, but it is a judgement call. I started with nap time, when I could wake in and see what he was doing and how he was handling it, making sure he wouldn't put it over his face. Now he is able to play with them before he goes to sleep and then snuggle with them when he is sleeping.

I just started putting Jillian in her crib and I put a small silikie type blanket in with her, I do put it in with her at naptime too and she doesn't move around at all in her crib so I thought it would be ok to put in at night time also.

I put it in her crib at 6 months--in our case, it was a stuffed animal, though it did have a ribbon. I didn't put something with a blanket type thing until later. It turns out she really became attached to the Lambie. Like a PP suggested, I'd try it out during her nap time for a while and see how it goes.

At our 6 month checkup, we showed our Dr. DD's lovey. She said it was fine. DD has slept with it ever since. She is 16 months old now, and at our 15 month checkup I asked about a blanket. She said it would be fine. We have currently just been using our Peek A Boo blanket -- since it is breathable. She seems to be doing well with it, so I'm going to try a little heavier blanket soon.

I think the recommendation is not to put anything in the crib with them until they are able to lift their head, upper body and roll over to get themselves away from anything that might cover their face. We waited til about 6-8 months.
