M &D Easel - chalkboard problems

My DS got hte Melissa and Dough Easel for christmas - we put it together and "primed" the chalkboard per the directions - it still doesn't really work very well. The chalk doesn't really show up. Have any others had this problem? Any suggestions? Anyone know the Melissa and Doug corporate website ( I threw away all of the packaging and I am haing trouble googling for it because so many online stores sell Melissa and doug. Hope someone cna help - we love this easel, but I really want my Ds to be able to use the chalkboard

We have the M&D easel and did nothing to prime the chalkboard and it works fine. We use the chunky sidewalk chalk, which I think is a little softer than regular chalk. Have you tried that?
