Lego/Megabloks building plate?

Where can I buy a building plate for Lego/Megabloks for the best price? Do I really need one?

The only ones I've seen are sold as the set of 4, and I don't need so many.

I've seen individual Lego building plates at the Lego store and Toysrus. The price at the Lego store was $10 and $12-13 at Toysrus. I just picked up a Lego duplo plate for DS. It's been useful because it gives DS a big base to build on top. Without the base, he'd usually just keep stacking the blocks one on top of each other until it falls apart.
