View Full Version : Tool Toy for 2 year old?

My DS (25 months) loves to take screwdrivers and try to unscrew all his toys. Obviously I cant let him play with real screwdrivers unsupervised, plus I have to stop him before he really gets anything open, so I would really like to find a toy that gives kids the sense that they are "unscrewing" or putting it together with tools- something like that. Does anyone have any ideas?

Toys r us has a great line of home depot tool sets for toddlers at very reasonable prices. My dd loves hers because she can "help" Daddy when he is working around the house. You can get all sorts of things and some of them have batteries that make them run like a drill that actually screws things in etc. HTH!

I got this toy truck from Toys R Us. It doesn't have a brand name...I don't have the toy in front of me. But it comes with a working drill that goes forward and reverse, drill bits, screwdriver, bolt tightener, hammer, bolts and nails. My 23 month old son absolutely loves it. He's able to remove the wheels and the engine. I think this was one of the best I spent on a toy. The truck was for $14.99. I found it in the toddler toy section like. It wasn't with the big boy toys. The truck is yellow and blue. I'm sorry, I'm not able to give you a mfg name. The toy is CA and I'm in Seattle right now.

That sounds exactly like what I am looking for! Would you mind posting the name when you get back? How long ago did you get it?

DS has been playing with a wooden tool set since he was 19-20 months old I'd say. Melissa and Doug makes one, but I think ours is slightly different. It might be by Schylling or Brio?

This looks cute!
Forgot to add, if you flip it over, it becomes a work bench
that you can bang on or screw into.

I remembered seeing the "take-apart car" in a toy catalog before Christmas. (for ages 18 months to 3 years old)
I just couldn't remember the particular catalog that I saw it.
But, after searching online, I did finally find it!
Hope this helps!

Charlie has that and LOVES it! I'm on the tool search too, but I'm looking for something bigger like the take apart car...off to look!

That take apart car is SOOOOO cool. And i cant believe the price on it!

Unfortunately my son is a giant (wearing size 6 clothes at 25 months) so there is no way he will fit into a car for 18-36 month olds. So although he could still take it apart, its pretty big. I will have to think about this one. Its so cool. Im going to go back and check the dimensions.

Thx for posting it!

Hi,

Sorry for the late response. The truck toy that I have was purchased at Toys R Us. It's called the Fun Years Preschool Tool Truck. You should be able to find it with the toddler toys.

Hope this helps.

Fun toy ideas!
I was interested in the responses because DD's favorite "toy" right now is a pen. The kind that screw together with a clicky top. She's good about not putting things in her mouth, but we take out the spring since it's so small. Might be a good *free* toy for you too. I'm surprised by how DD takes it apart and reassembles it so well. And did I mention it was free? :D :P

Kaya definitely enjoys taking apart pens. It's why I had to hide most of them away. :P

She also likes to open and close screw-cap containers, so that might be a fun toy for some of your kids.

That car looks really cool, but Kaya does already have a car so I may investigate some of the wooden toy benches PP suggested.

Sorry!

We have some simple wooden puzzle boxes from Bitsandpieces.com that Kaya enjoys taking apart and putting back together. We got our stacking dolls from there as well and Kaya loves those! Obviously, neither are tools exactly, but they do involve taking apart and putting back together.

This looks perfect for my DS. Unfortunately, rompbrooklyn doesn't seem to carry it anymore. Does anyone know who makes this toybox? I like that it can turn over to be a bench.

I saw one by Melissa and Doug at a local toystore, and I saw a table at Land of Nod, but it's a little large for our small apartment.

Any feedback over whether 2-year olds actually enjoy playing with this kind of thing and whether it's worth getting a table or just a small set?

We have the iPlay Little Builder tool belt, very basic and simple, which DD liked as a toddler. It was good to start with, but I found that she outgrew it all too quickly.
http://intplay.com/ViewBrandProduct.aspx?brand=3&id=522

iPlay also has the Power Shop line of tools, which might last a little longer. Here is the light up screwdriver set:

Click on 'back' to see the rest of the toys in the line.

Small World Toys has the Little Handyman's Tool Box. There's also a great looking tool bench (a nice compromise between wood and plastic.)

If you go back a level, you can see the other tools in the line. I like that these are in colors that could work with either boys or girls.

The Target Play Wonder line has some realistic Bosch branded tools that are very cute. I was drooling over these in store when they first came out. These aren't the same as the ones on the Target website.

Here's a link to a bunch of options I found:

We have a constuction truck made by Battat that we bought at TJ Max for about $12. It comes with a battery opperated screw driver that the kids can use to take it completely appart and put it back together. DS started playing with it when he was around 2 and at almost 4 it is still a favorite. We always look for it first for birthday gifts because everyone loves it. We have always been able to find them at TJ Max or Marshall's. Here is one that we recently found at TJ Max for a birthday gift.
